Kia is recalling over 427,000 examples of its Telluride SUV for a vehicle rollaway risk due to an improperly assembled intermediate shaft and drive shaft.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-24 Kia Telluride SUVs. The intermediate shaft and right-front drive shaft may not be fully engaged due to improper assembly, which can damage the intermediate shaft splines, allowing the vehicle to roll away while in Park. Unintentional vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash or injury. Kia advises drivers to manually engage the emergency parking brake before leaving the vehicle until the recall remedy is completed. Drivers may notice a grinding noise and or reduced motive power in the affected vehicles.

To remedy the issue, dealers will replace any damaged intermediate drive shafts and update the vehicle’s electronic parking brake software for free. Kia will notify vehicle owners May 15, but owners can contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542 (Kia’s number for this recall is SC303), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
