Lucid Air Grand Touring Video Review: Sedan or Spaceship? Why Not Both?
There are currently two schools of thought when it comes to creating the latest and greatest luxury electric vehicle. The first is “Let’s keep it a car,” as in taking a perfectly normal luxury car and just swapping out the gas engine for an electric powertrain. We’ve seen this in the absolutely fantastic 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 sedan, which looks and operates just like a gas-powered G80 but features an excellent battery-electric powertrain instead. The other school of thought is “Let’s make a spaceship,” and we’ve seen the perfect example of that in all of the latest Mercedes-EQ sedans. They’re wildly styled, feature crazy tech-laden interiors and practically require two weeks of astronaut training to operate them.
But don’t you wish that someone would mix the two schools up? Like, make a car that’s easy to operate and works like a car, but also features wild styling and genuinely luxurious trimmings? Well, somebody has. With the Lucid Air Grand Touring, you get the best of both worlds.
We had our first exposure to the Lucid Air in late 2021 out in California, where we got to drive the debut Dream Edition around the streets and highways of Los Angeles for a couple of hours. But this is one of the new series production models, the Grand Touring trim, and we were able to use it as a daily driver for a few days. Yes, it’s a 2022 model and not a 2023, but there’s not much materially different between them — and I have to say, as impressed as I was with the early production Air Dream Edition, this latest one is even more stunning.
Watch the video below if you want to see just why the new Lucid Air might be the most significant, best-executed electric luxury sedan to come along yet.
