Mercedes-Benz Touts All-New GLS as Its Largest, Most Luxurious SUV

Mercedes-Benz may have bowed out of a couple of this year’s major American auto shows, but the automaker is back with big plans for New York. Among the automaker’s announcements for the 2019 New York International Auto Show is the unveiling of a redesigned version of the GLS SUV. The model was last refreshed for 2017; prior to that, it was called the GL-Class.

Details are slim, but Mercedes says the updated GLS will be the “largest and most luxurious” SUV in its lineup, likening it to the brand’s flagship S-Class sedan. For the new model year, it gets more spacious thanks to an approximately 2.4-inch-longer wheelbase.

It also gets some additional high-tech luxury features, such as three fully electrically adjustable rows of seats and the E-Active Body Control active suspension borrowed from the GLE; it uses the vehicle’s forward-scanning cameras and mapping data to tilt the car into corners by adjusting the electric dampers at each corner independently. Mercedes says it “ensures superior suspension comfort, agile handling and good off-road capabilities.”
The new GLS will make its debut in New York on April 17 alongside updated versions of the GLC Coupe and SUV, CLA35 and A35. Stay tuned for more, as Cars.com will have its team of automotive journalists on site in New York bringing you all the action straight from the show floor.
