2024 Hyundai Santa Fe Unveiled, Gets Extreme Makeover

Hyundai’s mid-size SUV is getting an extreme makeover in both size and style for 2024 — in fact, the new Santa Fe is unrecognizable … and may no longer be a mid-size SUV. Ahead of its reveal next month, Hyundai teased the new model today. The fifth-generation Santa Fe will trade its two-row configuration for three rows and its sleek face and angular body for a bold, blocky grille and boxy, stocky silhouette.

The 2024 Santa Fe’s styling departure is dramatic. In front, it wears a completely new squared-off, horizontal-based grille that features slit-like headlights in an H shape, a style reminiscent of some of the brand’s electric vehicles. Hyundai says the new H-shaped design elements reinterpret Hyundai’s H badge.

The H theme carries over in back with a squared-off rear end that reminds us of the Land Rover Defender’s right-angle style. Although Hyundai didn’t release any specs, the automaker said the new Santa Fe will feature three rows; the current Santa Fe has two rows, but previous models had three. Hyundai already has a three-row SUV with the Palisade, though we’re not yet sure how the two vehicles measure up in terms of passenger room and cargo space. The automaker did say the new Santa Fe will ride on a longer wheelbase than the outgoing model and have a roomier interior.

One unique new feature is the large tailgate, which the automaker says offers “terrace-like space” for outdoor activities. In fact, Hyundai says the new model is optimized for “effortless outdoor lifestyles,” and based on the photos released, it may even be offered with a roof tent accessory. It’ll be interesting to see just how the new Santa Fe can make camping easier (especially with kids).

Inside, the H theme continues to dominate, carrying over to the dashboard and air vents. In terms of cabin materials, Hyundai says the Santa Fe incorporates a number of sustainable ones; the headliner, floor mats, and second- and third-row seatbacks are made from recycled plastic, for example.

On the tech front, the SUV will feature a panoramic curved display that pairs the large infotainment system screen with a large digital gauge cluster. There’s also dual wireless cellphone charging. No word yet on if the infotainment system offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an area where Hyundai currently falls short of its competitors.

We’ll get the chance to see the new model in person at an event next month; check back for more.
