Past Prime: Toyota Renames Plug-In 2025 Prius Prius Plug-in Hybrid

Just in time for Amazon’s Prime Big Deals Day, Toyota is stepping away from the Prime label. As it did with the 2025 Toyota RAV4, the company is renaming the 2025 Toyota Prius with a plug. No longer the Prius Prime, it’s now the self-explanatory Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

One could argue that, under its new name, the Prius PHEV is all-new for 2025. But aside from the badge, it’s the same vehicle as the 2024 Prius Prime. The plug-in uses the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as the regular Prius, but backs it up with more powerful electric motors, bumping output from the standard Prius’ 194 horsepower to 220 hp. The transmission is a continuously variable automatic, and every variant is front-wheel drive.

With a 13.6-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the base Prius PHEV SE can travel up to 44 miles on electricity alone. The XSE and XSE Premium, with larger wheels and heavier option loads, are rated for 39 miles. A solar roof panel  that can charge the vehicle while parked is available, and power auxiliary systems are underway. In Hybrid mode, Toyota says the SE returns 53/51/52 mpg city/highway/combined, while the XSE gets 50/47/48 mpg; for comparison, the standard Prius returns a best of 57/56/57 mpg. (Official EPA figures for 2025 are not yet available.)

Standard and Available Safety Features

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on the Prius PHEV and includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure prevention, lane-tracing assist, road-sign recognition and automatic high beams.

Not included under the TSS 3.0 umbrella but also standard are blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking, and traffic-jam assist that controls steering and vehicle speed in traffic at speeds below 25 mph (subscription required). Optional safety equipment consists of a 360-degree camera system and automated parking.

Trim Levels

The entry-level Prius PHEV is the SE. It rides on dark-gray 17-inch wheels and features LED lighting front and rear, keyless start and entry, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Inside, it has cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel and an 8-inch touchscreen.

The mid-level XSE upgrades to 19-inch wheels, synthetic leather, a heated and power-adjustable driver’s seat and a wireless phone charger. At the top of the line, the XSE Premium adds a fixed glass roof, power-opening hatch, heated and ventilated front seats, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with an eight-speaker JBL sound system.

Availability and Pricing

The 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will go on sale later this year. Pricing will be available closer to the start of sales.
