Infotainment screens present automakers with an uncomfortable problem. They want the displays to keep their distinct brand identity, but there’s the inconvenient fact that the touchscreens buyers are most familiar with are the phones in their pockets. As infotainment systems integrate ever more functions, what’s that display on the dash other than a smartphone too big for a pocket?
For navigation, at least, Rivian’s latest solution is a sort of infotainment mullet: Rivian in front, Google in back. The new Rivian navigation with Google Maps takes the functions of the leading navigation platform — routing, estimated time of arrival, real-time traffic information and disruptions — and cloaks it in Rivian graphics.
On both the in-vehicle display and the Rivian mobile app, the new system sports a fresh look with updated colors and the ability to display range upon arrival at a destination in terms of battery charge percentage, miles of range remaining or both. It also includes electric-vehicle-specific functionality like charging-station suggestions augmented by data gleaned from other Rivian drivers. The automaker’s charging-station scoring accounts for factors such as success rates and time to initiate charging in assigning individual stations a reliability rating.
The new navigation system also integrates features that will be familiar to anyone who has used Google Maps on a computer or phone, such as markers for points of interest. Tap these on the Rivian’s screen, and a summary pops up including its Google rating, hours and photos.
The Google Maps integration is part of an over-the-air update available to Rivian owners now.
