Toyota and its luxury arm, Lexus, have extended the battery warranties offered for the brands’ hybrid vehicles to 10 years or 150,000 miles of driving, whichever comes first. This matches what was already required by law in California. For owners in other states, the warranty was previously eight years or 100,000 miles. Warranties for both car brands cover first owners and all subsequent owners.

The change applies to all new model-year 2020 hybrid vehicles. Model-year 2019 and older cars will still be covered by the eight year/100,000-mile policy — which is also the coverage period for the non-battery components of the hybrid system, including the battery voltage sensor, power management control module and inverter with converter.

The change to the hybrid battery warranty applies to the following 2020 Toyota models:

Buyers of any of these vehicles should take extra care to read their warranty to learn what is and isn’t covered before any repairs become necessary.
