2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2020 Toyota RAV4?

The Toyota RAV4 is a popular compact SUV with room for five people. It was redesigned last year and offers a choice of gas or hybrid drivetrains. Toyota also sells a plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4, dubbed RAV4 Prime. Front- and all-wheel-drive versions are available, and competitors include the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue and Volkswagen Tiguan

What’s New on the 2020 Toyota RAV4?

Toyota has added a TRD Off-Road model to the lineup that includes unique styling cues, different wheels and tires and unique suspension tuning. Android Auto smartphone connectivity is now included.

What Features in the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Are Most Important?

The Adventure and TRD Off-Road models have a rough-and-tumble, go-anywhere attitude, but perhaps more important for the majority of shoppers is the SUV’s extensive list of standard active safety features. The RAV4 offers plenty of passenger and cargo space, as well as the higher ride height many SUV shoppers like. The RAV4 Hybrid gets an impressive EPA-estimated 40 mpg combined with standard all-wheel drive.

Should I Buy the 2020 Toyota RAV4?

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 is a well-rounded SUV that’s perfectly suited to a wide range of needs and budgets. With a new TRD Off-Road model in the lineup, Toyota is aiming the RAV4 at a more adventure-oriented audience. Still, at its heart the RAV4 is a sensible family vehicle that’s loaded with safety features. The interior can be noisy and the standard gas engine delivers modest acceleration, but cabin materials are noticeably nicer than those of the previous generation.

Great overall vehicle, 40-ish MPG.

PROS: * Overall 39 or 40 MPG combined city and highway. Really. * 500+ mile range on a full tank * Toyota's driver assist goodies work well (radar cruise, et. al) to reduce driver fatigue in both stop-and-go commuting and highway trips. * Sufficient power and acceleration to compete with big-city freeway traffic; uphill freeway on-ramps and so forth. * Nicely agile without being skittish. It goes where you tell it to with no drama. * I have done mild off-roading in Arizona. No problems, handles as hoped for. CONS: * Only one I can think of. Front seats are stiff. I find myself shifting my weight to get comfortable more often than I like.

Comfortable car w/great mileage

The ride and room are quite good. In cold weather the mileage is 35-37 mpg and in warm weather up to mid 40s. The 40 mpg noted on the sticker is quite obtainable based on the16k miles driven to date. Toyota also fixed the gas tank issue which my vehicle had.
