Toyota is recalling around 211,000 examples of its model-year 2023-24 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles for a faulty electronic rear door latch. Approximately 55,000 of the vehicles affected in the recall are in the U.S.
In affected vehicles, water can enter and short-circuit the electronic rear door latches. If the rear doors are unlocked, they could open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion or in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to passengers.
To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the rear door-opener switches for free. Until the remedy is performed, Toyota recommends vehicle owners activate the feature that automatically locks the doors when shifting from Park to prevent the door from opening in the case of a short circuit. Toyota will notify vehicle owners by early June, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-331-4331, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
