In honor of the national newspaper’s 25th anniversary, USA Today is compiling Top 25 lists looking back at milestones, from film to music to cars. The car list is an interesting look at the recent past, but it’s not perfect.
We wouldn’t argue that the Toyota Camry and Ford Explorer don’t deserve their top two rankings, but there are some glaring cars missing. There are no Hondas on the list, and to exclude the Honda Civic is almost a sin.
The list also hails the Toyota RAV4 as the first crossover SUV in 1996. While it beat the Honda CR-V to market by a few months, it wasn’t as beloved as the CR-V over the next decade.
USA Today also lists the first-generation Prius in its top 10, but it wasn’t until the second-generation Prius hit the streets in 2004 that mainstream America embraced the idea of hybrids.
