Shoppers clamoring for an all-wheel-drive Volkswagen wagon – something not offered in the U.S. for quite some time – will soon have that all-weather combination available in the 2017 Golf SportWagen Alltrack. The Alltrack is an all-terrain package with all-wheel drive and other off-road-focused features and is based on the new Golf SportWagen.
Volkswagen tested the waters with a couple all-wheel-drive wagon concepts in the past few years: the Alltrack concept at the 2012 New York International Auto Show and a Golf SportWagen concept featuring all-wheel drive at the 2014 New York auto show. Consumer demand for an all-wheel-drive wagon proved too strong to ignore.
“We have heard from dealers and customers that they want to see a Golf SportWagen with the all-terrain capability that comes from all-wheel drive,” Michael Horn, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, said in a statement.
The Alltrack’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system will act like a front-wheel-drive car during normal driving to conserve fuel and will deliver up to 50 percent torque to the rear wheels when slippage of the front wheels is detected. Compared with the Golf SportWagen, the Alltrack also has an inch more ground clearance, wheel-arch moldings and flared side sills, redesigned bumpers and, according to VW, an even more upscale interior.
The front-wheel-drive SportWagen goes on sale in April 2015; shoppers will have to wait until 2016 to get their hands on the all-wheel-drive Alltrack. We’ll have more details on feature availability and specifications as soon as that information becomes available.
