Volkswagen ID. Aero Concept Identified as VW’s First Electric Sedan


The newly revealed ID. Aero concept previews Volkswagen’s first all-electric sedan, according to the German automaker. Looking like a lowered and slightly elongated version of the (not-for-North-America) ID.5 — itself a coupified ID.4 — the ID. Aero will be sold in China, Europe and the U.S., despite the latter market demonstrating a distinct distaste for sedans.

“With the ID. Aero show car, we are revealing a preview of the next member of our electric vehicle family. It’s a car with an emotional and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, a range of more than [373 miles], an extraordinary amount of space and a premium interior,” Ralf Brandstatter, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said in a statement.
According to VW, the ID. Aero rides on the same architecture as its other EVs and should live up to its “Aero” name with an extremely low coefficient of drag of 0.23. Range is estimated to be roughly 385 miles based on European testing, though official EPA numbers are often lower.












Few other details about the ID. Aero have been revealed. According to VW, it rides on 22-inch wheels and uses a 77-kilowatt-hour battery pack (identical to the ID.4’s pack). It’s just over 16 feet long, a bit longer than the ID.4 but about the same length as the departing Passat sedan. In true concept-car fashion, the ID. Aero eschews traditional door handles for touch surfaces. It’s unclear just how much of the concept will survive into production, but it is, for the most part, a production-ready vehicle. Of course, we also haven’t seen a single glimpse of the interior, something production cars are usually required to have.
