Over the last couple of months, the digital gauges in our long-term Kia EV9 electric SUV have failed on occasion, preventing drivers from seeing pertinent information like speed and battery life. It appears to be an issue for other owners, too, with 84 complaints filed to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as of early October. At the time, there was no fix other than to let the vehicle reset on its own, but Kia now has come out with a resolution, and it’s an easy one: an over-the-air update.
Affected vehicles include more than 14,000 model-year 2024-25 EV9s. The issue involves a software communication error within the instrument cluster at vehicle startup. The screen goes blank and fails to display important information like warning lights and the speedometer, increasing the risk of a crash.
To resolve the issue, the instrument cluster software will be updated via an over-the-air update or by a dealer for free. Kia will notify owners Oct. 31, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-333-4542 (Kia’s number for this recall is SC326), NHTSA’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
