XC Marks the Safe Spot: 2020 Volvo XC60, XC90 Earn Top Safety Ratings

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced that two 2020 Volvo SUVs, the XC60 and XC90 (or is it XCs 60 and 90, like “attorneys general?”) have earned the insurance-industry-backed safety advocacy organization’s crashworthiness awards. The XC60 is a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick, while the XC90 gets the agency’s highest award of Top Safety Pick Plus.

Qualifying for either award required that each Volvo receive ratings of good — on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal or poor — in each of the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof-strength and head restraint crash tests. The SUVs also needed a score of superior or advanced — on a scale of superior, advanced, or basic — in automated front crash prevention testing involving both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crashes. The XC60’s and XC90’s standard front crash prevention technologies each received superior ratings for the vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and advanced ratings for vehicle-to-pedestrian crash prevention.
Headlight testing is an additional component in IIHS evaluations, with Top Safety Pick designees required to have at least one set of available headlights rated acceptable or good. In the XC60’s case, the LED headlights are available as part of the Advanced Package on Momentum, R-Design and Inscription XC60s earned an acceptable rating; standard headlights for the three trims earned a marginal rating.
The highest Top Safety Pick Plus designation requires that acceptable or good headlights be standard on all trim levels. Both sets of available headlights for the XC90 were rated as acceptable.
