Buyers beware.

Buyers beware. Here are the facts. After her first vist, my wife came to terms and put a deposit down on a van at the dealership. She was not given a sales sheet. Told by the salesperson that the paint chips would be touched up and the van would be detailed. Three days later she visits the dealership to finalize the sale. Paint chips were not fixed, detailing was incomplete with plastic water bottle in one of the door storage shelves and old french fries under the middle row passenger side captain chair. The finance manager gave her an 8.33% interest rate. They also added a $299.99 dealership charge for Shadowmark window etching. No member of the dealership asked about or explained this dealership charge. She had to reschedule another visit to get the paint chip touch ups. I made the third visit. The appointment for touch up was 10:00. I arrived at 10:05. The touch up crew didn’t get to the dealership for another 20 minutes. I confronted the sales manager and finance manager about the Shadowmark charge. He said it was put on all the cars. They put it on their cars when they purchase one. In reality, the etching is a $10 kit thay takes 10 minutes to apply, but the dealership charges $299.99. When I told them it’s not a mandatory add-on and I know that it’s a $10.00kit, and my wife was never told about it. The finacial manager changed his story and said that it’s the dealership’s one and only dealership charge. I asked for a cancellation and a refund. They refused. I informed them that I would be contacting the Attorney General’s office to file a complaint. The sales manager said, “Go right ahead.” As I waited for the paint chip crew to arrive, the finance manager found me on the sales floorand informed me that they would refund the $299.99. The illegal add-on was the worst of their missteps, of which there were several. Because of the hassles, this dealership earned 1 star. Future car buyers pay attention! Be careful, and check your sales sheet. Look for non-taxable charges. Ask about every charge. Mid-sized dealerships like this make on average $800,000 a year on illegal add-ons like Shadowmark, Lojack, and others.
