Buyer Beware

Saturday, July 14, 2018 we went to view a 1998 VW Cabrio the dealer had numerous positive reviews and the condition of the car was very good considering its age. The owner of the dealership, Jeff, also agreed to include a 6 month/6,000 mile Platinum Drivetrain Warranty that covered up to $5,000 of repairs at no cost to us. There were several items we discussed prior to purchase that we were told would be done/checked by their mechanic. 1. The floor of the car on the passenger side flooded on the passenger side. Bryan, stated he fix the carpets and have the drainage tube blown out as it was most likely blocked and the water overflowed during a storm a few days prior. At this time the owner, stated the flooding was due to his forgetting to roll the window up when he finished driving it on the day of the storm. a. After delivery of the vehicle it was immediately apparent that the AC was leaking into the passenger compartment from under the carpet as you could see the water seeping through. Photos were sent. b. I drove the vehicle through a car wash, and water began pouring in to the passenger compartment. I sent additional photo as well as a video taken while still in the car wash. 2. On Saturday, the convertible top was not working. had them write it onto the deposit receipt and the contract that the roof must be functioning correctly for the sale. The repair couldn’t be done until Monday. We traveled (2 hours/100 miles one way), & did not want to make the trip again. We agreed to split the cost of transport. a. Delivery of the Cabrio was scheduled for 1:00 on Wednesday. They “forgot” to leave the keys with the vehicle for the transport company that morning. The delivery was delayed until after 8:00 pm (dark). The transporter left without providing any paperwork. We immediately noticed that since Saturday, it had been involved in an accident that left scratches and residue of white paint on the front, bumper and panel around the wheel well. i. Jeff did offer to pay for it to be repaired and professionally painted in three weeks when his painter returned from vacation and we could split the cost. This would entail 2 additional 5 hour round trip drives which is inconvenient and not safe (see item 6). 3. Thursday, I put the top down, it would not go back up. I immediately drove to our mechanic who found the top wouldn’t go up because there was no wiring connecting the motor to the switch. When I asked him what that meant, he stated that and the wiring must have been “rigged” somehow, there were no wires leading to the switch on the console to control the top. He also stated there was no way they could not have known about the electrical issues. a. I left a message stating the problem and we needed to arrange to return the car as the terms were not met. The owner, Jeff, called me to say he spoke to his “partner” and they could not give a refund. b. Bryan said should bring the car back for them to fix, and if they couldn’t they would, refund our money. I told him I can’t take another 5 hours for the round-trip drive, not to mention that I would have to do it twice; once to drop off then to pick up. I would also have to take time off work to do this or be without a vehicle for a week while I spent two Saturdays going back and forth with my husband in a second car to bring me back home and back to them again. 4. The car is not shifting when on the highway (automatic) I took to a transmission shop. There were in fact 7 error codes being given when hooked up to the computer that were all solenoid electrical related. They discover that the wires to the “Check Engine” light had been cut. This was preventing the warning light from coming on giving the false impression that there were no issues. a. When the warranty company was contacted, they stated that none of these issues were covered and they covered only $2,000, not $5,000.

Waste of time

The "check engine" light was on in the first vehicle I was shown and the second vehicle didn't seem to want to start! So, I left immediately!

Nice 2003 Honda Accord

My Marlin Motors experiece was amazing. All of the people that worked there were genuine and wanted to really help me find a car that was satisfying and reliable and I ended up accomplishing that mission. They ordered me newer tires, cleaned out the car really well, and even offered me a free oil change. Also, I received a warranty for being a college student. I highly recommend them to college students who need an inexpensive, yet working and reliable car. The friendly staff had great energy, made me feel comfortable, helped me get insurance, and made sure I picked a car that fit me perfectly!!! 5/5 STAR!!! I can say that I proudly bought a 2003 Honda Accord from Marlin Motors!

Bad Business

I thought the place was a good location because they seem very friendly but when I went back to see them to buy another vehicle a Duke me by telling me the title will be coming in the mail when it never did as I had to contact the Virginia dealer board to get results a resolution and only after I started tweaking around I started to find out that they never had the title and that as soon as that occurred they threatened to unwind the deal

Great sale from Marlin Motors

This was the greatest buying experience I have ever experienced with a car. The process was quick and fun and warm with kindness. Bryan helped me decide on the perfect choice of my newly owned vehicle. The car rides like a dream. When I told him about the decision to buy his smile made my heart sing. I will definitally recomend others to shop here. Thank you Bryan and Melissa

Highly Recommended

Marlin Motors made searching for and ultimately buying a car a great experience. The staff is both friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Marlin Motors is not pushy and instead matched me up with several fairly priced options to consider - including the car I ultimately purchased. Highly recommended.

Great Service -- Repeat

This was my second visit to Marlin Auto Sales in Virginia. I bought a 2004 Honda Odyssey last month and loved it. And, now, I made a second trip to Norfolk especially to see Jeff Fox, Melissa, David and Brian and bought a 2006 version of the same.

A No Pressure Dealership.Nice salespeople

We were on our third day searching for a vehicle and checked the classified ads in the local paper. The search was over when I got to actually speak to a human and not a long drawn out recording like the big dealer ships have.We went and bought one without hesitation. The “Wiz” was not pushy whatsoever.Test drove and signed on the dotted line.Paid in full.

Great prices, and service

Hey my name is Pandora, I just recently started leasing a Nissan Versa. I had a few problems (nothing major), but Brian corrected them with no problem. The whole staff has a positive attitude, and was very helpful. Thanks Jeff, Brain, and Melissa.
