On these extended cab, 4-wheel drive pickup trucks, the steering gear to frame attachment bolts were not properly tightened. Over time, these bolts can loosen, allowing the steering gear to move, resulting in an unresponsive steering feel and noise to the driver. If this condition is ignored, the bolts can wear or fatigue to the point of breaking or the bolts can back out. If all the bolts break or back out, the steering gear will separate from the frame, resulting in a loss of steering control.
Dealers will retighten the steering gear to frame bolts to the proper specifications. Owner notification began Oct. 6, 1998. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782.
