Reliable enough for work
The 1998 Ford Contour I own is reliable enough to get me to and from work, and gas mileage is alright but nothing too great. I would recommend this car to a friend only if they were looking for something very cheap, dependable, and not trying to catch the eye of anyone at all.
98 SE SPORT 5SPD - VERY LOVELY CAR.
CAR HAS A SPORTY FEEL TO IT, HANDLING IS ABOVE AVERAGE FOR CAR THAT RESEMBLES A JELLY BEAN...BUT THAT CAR IS GREAT...I HAVE THE V6 IN IT AND IT IS VERY IMPRESSIVE, LOVES TO REV AND HAS ALOT OF TORQUE, SO IT IS DEFINATLY NOT SLOW. QUALITY OF THE INTERIOR MATERIALS ARE OBVIOUSLY SUB-PAR, BUT IF CAN GET PASSED THAT, THE CAR IS A GREAT, HIGHLY RECOMEND IT.
This Car is not worth it!!!
I bought this car off my sister and her husband. They had bought it at an auto auction. Between us we've spent over $800 dollars trying to get this car even stable. The timing belt was replace June 06 and I have already had to replace it back in the begining of this year (January/ February 2007). The brakes have been replaced and they are already so bad I'm afraid to drive my car. The mirror valance thing on the inside roof of the car are loose and I hit my head on the drivers side one. (Which is sad because I'm only 5 feet even!) The steering wheel has messed up way more than what my comfort level allows for. It won't let me turn sometimes! The turn signal on the back right has gone out and somehow started functioning again and oh not to mention the heat is messed up. It overheats and puts out too hot of air. The plus sides I like about the car are that on the inside it's roomy and the center console is awesome and the gas mileage would surprize some! Overall I would rate the car as VERY POOR quality and I would not recommend this car to a new driver.... I'm only 18 and this first time car is a night mare!
I love mine
Having comfort for long travel, Power to handle any and all the mountain passes in the northern and southern parts of Az., New Mexico, Texas and Calf.. The fuel miliage twice reached 37 mpg. Plenty of room for travel for the three of us. Air conditioning miliage was a respectable 33 - 35. I have never gotten less that 31 mpg around town, between East Mesa and Pheonix. Handling is verrryy good. I am 65 and love the size. This is the 1st Ford since my Mustang. I like it better that my Sentra.
Don't even bother
This car was trouble from the day we bought it. There are many people out there who love their Ford Contours, but I am certainly not one of them. It's possible my review is so poor, because we've only spent $3500 on a used model. The problems first began with the tires, then it was the transmission (had to replace - good luck with this, many are fearful of Ford Contour transmissions), then something apparently went wrong with the CO2 sensors, and now the timing belt needs to be replaced. Should have bought a more expensive, but at least reliable, car. There's nothing good about the car by way of comfort and design. It's ugly, period. Handling is mediocre, though lately, it's been terrible. But then again, the car gave up on me in the middle of the road (a busy road!). Don't let the features fool you. Don't focus too much on all the little extras you'll probably never use. Focus on buying worthwhile car.
