Great truck

This truck is the best truck ever owned. I purchased it used 16 year ago and made no major repairs. Now has well over 230,000 miles and still going

1998 Ranger Stepside 2.5L: saved from bump n run

I have only had one other truck in my life, and was not in the market for one when I came across a guy who was looking to get rid of his 1998 Ford Ranger XLT 2.5L stepside, or he was going to enter it in a local bump n run race. I took it off his hands for $300 dollars. This truck had rust, was rough around the edges, and 345,000 miles on it. But the engie had a partial overhaul about 90k miles ago. I spent about $1500 on some items like brakes, tires, body & appearance, muffler, headlights, minor engine stuff (pcv, egr, breather box, vac hoses, etc), and a used topper for $50. After that, I have a reliable little truck that gets me around 26-28 mpg, looks good for it's age, and has just enough power to pull a small utility trailer with equipment in it. I think this is the only little truck that can be ready to put out to pasture, and yet be resurected so easily and cheaply. I have been driving it for about 6 months and it has over 352k miles, and still sounds strong!

Mechanically sound

This car is a great starter car. It runs well and drives. The outside looks a little beat up but that?s what trucks are for.

I Love This Truck & It's Reliability

This Ranger brought me to my first job and first three years of college. I got it back in 2013 with 69K miles, a very basic XL model. I put 21K miles on it and had a lot of fun with it. I upgraded some basic parts, took care of the ball joints and rods for $850 bucks earlier this year, and haven't had any other major repairs needed. It was extremely reliable for me and that's just one reason why I loved it so much. I could own a truck that averaged between 17-20 MPG for every fill up. The only thing was when I started commuting more, I was filling up around every two weeks since it's only got a 16.6 gallon tank that sometimes gave me 260-300 miles between fill ups. I highly recommend this to anyone that wants something fun, and that doesn't cost too much to own, especially as a first truck! decided to get something a bit bigger that would meet more of my needs.

tremendous little truck

98 Ranger StepSide 4.0 4X4 238000 miles runs like a top , original drive train, windshield leaks, can't shut heat off, and of course the switch for 4 whk drv is intermittent, mpg is horrendous (dint buy it that tho) would/will buy another immediately - if this one EVER dies

Hard to kill

Simple in all ways and special for that reason. It can tip toe through 8 inches of fresh, wet snow on bad all-season tires just as well as it can haul a massive load of gardening soil up a hill (with only a hint of a wheelie). It may break, but the little 4-cylinder never dies, even at 200k+. And with nothing in the back, it'll even powerslide on a wet road! Great little truck and I miss mine.

Dependable Truck

Dependable Truck if used for intended purpose. Smaller motors have a lot lower power, would buy 4.0 instead of 3.0
