It's still a Jeep...

The 2014 Jeep Patriot Limited is a decent little Jeep for the money. Little is a key word here, as it is a compact SUV. I wouldn't mind the smaller cargo room and space except the one thing you'd expect from a smaller SUV is higher gas milage. The Patriot's daily commute driving MPG leaves a lot to be desired. It's rated 23/30 but what I get is 17/23. Checking online forums other owners get about the same. I do occasionally take it off-road and with the 4x4 on-the-fly option, and it has never gotten stuck and actually negoatiated a few tough trails to my surprise. In low gears with 4x4 engaged, it crawls right along with few problems. However, it doesn't have the highest clearance. While there are different packages for the Patriot, mine came with the CVT, or continuous variable transmission, which at highway speeds does produce some road noise which takes a while to get used to. Overall, my impression of the Patriot is that Jeep tried to find a balance between city errands and off-road excellence, and the compromises are more distracting and glaring than they are functional. After owning the Patriot for one year, I am seriously ready to trade it in for two used cars, one bigger SUV or truck and the other a small cheap older errands car with high MPG. If the Patriot was a little more like the Wrangler and had the option for a soft top, it would definitely change my mind, but as is, it feels and looks like a small Jeep that has some cool features and functions like a Jeep, but then watered down and tamed for city life. If you want a 4x4 off road vehicle, this is not it. If you want a good city driver, this is not it. If you need to haul much gear or things from the store as well as a couple friends, this is not it. I'm not really sure what this is, but there more to say about what it is not than there is about what it is (say that three times fast). Not even sure it makes for a good college car because the cargo space is so limited. But, it has been reliable and repairs are cheap. If you can find one for a great price and are easy going enough to live with the compromises, then go for it. But fair market or even just a good price, I'd look elsewhere.

Good Value for the Dollar

I have around 30K miles on my Patriot. Thinks of this as a replacement for the Jeep Cherokee - good reliable transportation, a true four wheel drive that can handle whatever winter throws at you. If you get a thrill from fast cars, don't but this. The four cylinder engine and five speed tranmission does a good job but no speedster. Yes it is noisier than my Mercedes but is that a surprise. Here's a tip. Get rid of the tires that it came with and put on a good set of Michelin radials - huge difference in noise level. Be aware that this is not the car to tow heavy boats or trailers. If you want to do that get at least a six cylinder.

small but great

I used to own a 2004 jeep grand cherokee. It had a lot more room than this one does, however, this one is great on gas and meets all of my needs as a mom of 3 children.

Affordable to buy

Most affordable 4 x 4. Held up well drive train wise. Things that should of lasted more than 100,000 miles like wheel bearings was disappointing but overall a good vehicle.

Worst car I've ever owned

Clutch, and entire transmission had to be replaced at only 40k miles. It is very cheap, loud, and you feel every bump. Good for a teenager's first car, but that's about it.

Surprising Performance !!

We needed a weekend SUV for all our travels. My 1996 Ford Explorer finally had to be put down, due to breakdowns/expensives, just killing the pocket book. The explorer a great car to us, kinda sad to see it go. So we started looking at SUV's on line as everyone does. We came across the Jeep Patriot 4X4 (2014). Wasn't quite sure what to think about this smaller 4 cylinder SUV? I was a bit skeptical to be honest. Took to it on a test drive, even hit the freeways and was shocked at how the Patriot handled. I live in an area with lots of mountains and hills, and ski the mountains ranges all the time. The Patriot passed the test with flying colors. I always have depended on V6 power and not a fan of 4 cylinder vehicles, but i have to say the Patriot had some get up and go. Best part is the Jeep Patriot gets way better gas mileage than our Ford Explorer. Thanks Jeep Patriot, you have a couple of more Jeep fans to add to the collection. Jeeps are nothing but a good time !!

Good, Reliable, Upgradable

It's a reliable commuter. The utility is off the charts. Glaring blind spots that can be dangerous. The Blind spot is huge and you can easily get side swiped or worse you'll miss a bicyclist and in the blink of an eye cause a deadly accident. Very reliable and sound.

A Jeep is a Jeep.

I've had no problems with this Patriot. I know a lot of people have had complaints, but I think it's great. Yes, it won't win any races, but since when do you buy a Jeep because of its get up and go? It will take you ANYWHERE you need to go with the right tires and I live on a horrible muddy dirt road and haven't even come close to getting stuck. I hope to drive this car until the wheels fall off. It gets decent gas mileage and is a tough crossover. I'll likely get the new compass as a replacement and hope it's like this Patriot.
