Drive it mainly for recreation in the summer

It does require a maintenance commitment since it is a performance sports car and one of the few left with a full manual 5 speed transmission

Best performance and handling bang for your buck

Replaced IMS and some other misc complimentary maintenance items when I bought it and haven?t had to do anything since. So much fun to drive. Amazing handling and good power with nice throttle response above 3,500 rpm.

Fantastic convertible sports car!

Great car for the automotive enthusiast and Porsche purist. Handles superb and runs along with nicely with the 911s and Caymans. Love this little car!

Most fun car I've owned

Traded up for this car from a Miata. I like doing Autocross and HPDE events and the difference between a mid-engine Boxster and a rear wheel drive Miata is night and day on the track. Totally different feel. I love it. As a confidence builder for any level driver, nothing compares. Except perhaps a Lotus. With that said, don't by a 1st generation 986 Boxster without checking to see if the car has a new IMS bearing. If the car doesn't have one, get it installed IMMEDIATELY. If the bearing goes, and there's a very good chance it will, you'll have to replace the engine. Not repair - replace. And don't listen to the people who say, "I've had mine for 10 years and have 100,000 miles on it and the bearing hasn't failed yet." They've just been lucky. IMS bearing failure isn't a question of "if" - it's a question of "when". It's preventable, so why not prevent it? You'll want one from LN Engineering as it's proven to be the best and most reliable. While you're having the bearing done, also check the clutch and the drive belt. You'll end up spending about 3,000 to 4,000 for the work, but you'll have a can you can drive for years and years to come without worrying about the engine failing.

Perfect car for sunny California

Well built convertible with just enough accessories to make the ride comfortable and fun, e.g. cruise control, tiptronic transmission, heated leather seats, etc. Handles really well thanks to a true mid-engine design

My first sports car

The color and shape caught my eye right away. I drove many miles to see and test drive it. It was pretty awesome. It has a 5 speed which is really fun. Awesome tires and easy convertible top. Great shape and low miles and really fun.

A blast to drive.......

I recently purchased my 02 Boxster. With a little over 32,500 miles on it I'd say it's basically a new car. I've never had a vehicle like this (although I've driven and been in a number of English sports cars-family owned). It's by far superior to anything English made. It's amazingly fast, it's comfortable, it draws attention wherever I take it and it's fun. I gave it a 3 star reliability rating, not because there are any problems with it but because I am aware of a bearing problem that approximately 8% of these vehicles suffered from. Time will tell if I will have that problem. Until then it's fun, fun, fun.

from roof leaking, to .... very bad experie

i was station in Germany and drove many European cars. came back home and this was a mistake buying this car. Its only good for few miles and then better get a second mortgage. The interior is imitation skin? to work on the engine in major surgery even for simple things. get rid of the car before it bites you. Have your sister marry the mechanic.
