Best Car I've Owned
We bought this car with 60,000 miles on it and it's gone another 100,000 with the only problems being minor or expected. In seven years of owning this car, the only repairs I've had to do are replacing the battery and getting new brakes. This car is so reliable and a ton of fun to drive. I had a '76 Corvette Stingray and I swear that the Jetta is more fun to drive and has more initial punch off the line that even the Vet. Love this car.

2000 Jetta 2.0 - Automatic
The 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine in Jettas are very reliable and perform well. Considering its an automatic an a small engine, its pretty quick and very fuel efficient. The Premium Monsoon Sound System is AWESOME for a stock radio with 11yr old technology. I love the body style of these Jettas (mk4) and my color, navy blue (galaxy blue from vw). I would recomend this car to someone who wants to save money but still have a good looking, quick, and all around inexpensive car.

Good and Bad.
It's an okay car. But I have big issue with the gas mileage:24mpg(average) . It's powerful for it's engine size, but I've got a 88 toyota corolla, and I would recommend that over this car. That's just my opinion. It's lasted me 36,000 miles, which isn't bad. And also it's an oil guzzeler. It has leaks in various places.I got it used for 6000 if anybody is wondering.

This car works for me - not the other way around
I have had the Jetta TDI for a couple of years. I commute 700 miles each week and take 800 mile trips 4 or 5 times a year. I am surprisingly refreshed at the end of the trip, with zero leg fatigue as I have experieced in Ford Explorers and Chevy Malibus and Jaguar XJ6. The car has had multiple issues - two CV axles, glow plug, fuel filter clogged up, to name a few. However, during the first year, I got everything fixed. The point is that it CAN be fixed by your local mechanic. I have had many cars with intermittent and strange problems (Chevy Malibu failed to start, Jaguar wipers came on when you hit the brakes) Having a car simple enough to get fixed is very important to me. The car has stranded me one time as I was on my way to the repair shop for another issue. The injector pump failed. Other than that, it has ALWAYS gotten me home. I don't like the cup holders, back seat, or trunk space. So, I am looking for a Passat TDI. My wife will drive the Jetta. I am NEVER letting it go. Because this car can be fixed.

Very poor reliability post-warranty
Heed the warnings from Consumer Reports, one of the used cars to avoid from 1998-2007. Bought new, lasted through warranties and then developed the following problems: Three replaced mass air flow sensors, glove box door latch broke twice, replaced coolant temp sensor three times, replaced three engine vacuum hoses, multiple broken springs from drivers and passenger seat mechanisms (not cost effective to fix), replaced transaxle - after which transmission developed constant fluid leaks, replaced transmission pan gasket, transmission pan. After replacing engine valve cover gasket, still leaking oil and running poorly, car must be replaced. Not to mention needless quirks - try changing a headlight bulb for instance (especially on the driver's side). The worst is having only a handful of private mechanics being able to check/change the transmission fluid. Dealership grossly overcharged for all maintenance, was rude and unhelpful.

My 2000 TDI Jetta
I bought this car new off the dealer's lot. I've put on 170,000 miles since I bought it and have enjoyed driving it very much. The Diesel engine has been bullet proof - change the oil regularly and put in timing belts as scheduled and it goes. The main problems have been the Mass Air Flow sensors and everything else. I have been through 11 mass air flow sensors (no exaggeration) and just about everything else that could go wrong. The dealer or Volkswagen paid for almost all of these sensors under parts warranty. Other problems include mainly electrically related things, from cruise control failure to power steering loss. But the engine, up to now has been great. The Mass Air Flow sensor problem seems to have been worked out by Volkswagen. I haven't had problems with it in over a year now! It has gotten great fuel mileage but now diesel is more expensive than gas so it isn't such an advantage like it used to be. Great to drive, miserable electronics!
