Vehicle Overview

The Suzuki SX4 is derived from an established overseas model, the Swift. It’s available as a front-drive sedan and SportBack hatchback, and the Crossover hatchback comes with standard all-wheel drive. All compete with other small vehicles such as the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Mazda3.

New for 2011
All models gain standard rear side airbags, giving the SX4 eight airbags in total. A new Anniversary Edition of the sedan includes 17-inch alloy wheels, rear disc brakes, remote keyless entry and paddle shifters.  The navigation system, which is standard on higher trim levels, adds Google Search features and traffic and weather information.

Exterior
From the center roof pillar forward, the SX4 Sport sedan is a dead ringer for the SX4 Crossover, featuring the same stylishly assertive face with creased bodywork. The SportBack ditches the Crossover’s roof rack for a cleaner profile. The SportBack and Sport sedan also have a lower ride height and firmer suspension than the Crossover. Exterior features include:

  • Four-door sedan or hatchback
  • Standard 16-inch wheels (Crossover)
  • Standard 17-inch wheels (Sport, SportBack)
  • Optional heated side mirrors (Sport)

Interior
The backseat is workable for adults, both in terms of headroom and legroom. The hatchback’s backseat is split 60/40 and can be folded flat and tumbled forward to free cargo space. Interior features include:

  • Standard driver and passenger armrests
  • Available navigation system
  • Available Bluetooth capability
  • Optional heated seats
  • Optional automatic climate control

Under the Hood
All SX4 models use the same engine and transmissions, though the Crossover has standard all-wheel drive and the others come with front-wheel drive. Mechanical features include:

  • 150-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder with 140 pounds-feet of torque
  • Standard six-speed manual transmission
  • Available continuously variable automatic transmission with manual-shift control
  • Front- or all-wheel drive

Safety
An electronic stability system is optional on the sedan and standard on the Crossover. Standard features include:

  • Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes
  • Side-impact airbags for front and rear seats
  • Side curtain airbags

  • Love this car!

Love this car! Would buy it again over and over. Have 257,000 miles on mine and still going. Other than brakes and tires, very minimal repairs. Interior, the back seat had an issue because I put too much weight in the trunk, and it is known to buckle. Exterior is cheap and has just started to rust after 13 years in one corner of one fender. The only major repair I have had was on the rear suspension and because these are no longer made, I couldn't find a new part for it, but it was easy to find one at a junk yard. This is a reliable daily driver for me and I take it everywhere. The only people I wouldn't recommend it for is someone really tall. I had 6"2" driver, and he fit, but not as comfortably as he would have liked.

  • It was pretty cheap.

It was pretty cheap. Got my 2011 sx4 in 2024, 5th hand, for around 4,000$. Very good for its price—for such an old model it drove so smoothly and took me pretty far. Sadly after a month the radiator hose exploded and I had to get it towed, but fixing it was easy. Besides that, great car—definitely got what I paid for.

  • Best car I have owned

We purchased our SX4 Ex-ec in September 2012, to date 25600 miles, never used a drop of oil, we have travelled 3 times through Europe to Austria and Italy, abroad averaging 50 Mpg in the UK up to 43 mpg. No complaints whatsoever and the most comfortable car we have had. Apart from service , had a new battery 2 years ago, Changed tyres at 20000, best and most reliable car I have ever owned during car ownership of 59 years.

  • Capable, Reliable, and Inexpensive

Bought a base crossover model used at 8 years old and 150k miles for a little under US$ 5k, and in two years I've put about 15k on it. It's required minimal maintenance despite being the oldest-at-purchase car I've gotten (all I've done is replaced the breaks which were worn down when I bought it), has run smoothly. The AWD system is very good; it kept me moving safely and steadily in snowy conditions in which I saw other (presumably AWD or 4WD-equipped) SUV's struggling. Being able to switch off the AWD to save gas in good conditions is also nice; I do mostly highway driving and pretty reliably get 28-32 mpg, and my worst tank came in around 25 mpg with lots of AWD and stop-and-go driving. For reference, that's significantly better than the Impreza of the same year (the car I see it most-often compared to). Now, the not-so-good. The car is small. There's no getting around that. If you have to haul a lot of stuff, move bulky objects, or carry lots of people, this may not be the vehicle for you. The A-pillars are a bit big and create an obnoxious blindspot but it's alleviated by portholes within the pillars. They're noticeable but pretty easy to work around if you're halfway observant. Interior/Comfort: not exactly luxurious, but if that's a deal-breaker for you I'm not sure why you're looking at budget-friendly compacts anyway. It's reasonably-comfortable, and I've never had anyone complain about feeling overly-cramped. The climate-control system is competent enough even if it's nothing fancy. The trunk's not huge, but it is big enough to be useful, and if you've got anything bigger to move folding down the back seats for more space is pretty easy. Performance: my vehicle is the 6-speed manual transmission, and in that configuration at least the J20B engine gives you plenty of power for whatever you might need to do on the highway or on a poorly-graded road. You can feel the road when driving this: it's a stiff, responsive ride, but not an uncomfortable one, and it's more fun than one might expect. As mentioned before, I've driven this through snowy and icy conditions that gave other SUV's some trouble with little to no slippage to show for it. The ability to lock the differential is also fantastic when you're on bad or poorly-tended roads or trails. It's not a true offroader, but my SX4 has handled some unpleasant dirt and gravel trails. In addition, this is the fourth or fifth manual transmissiom car I've driven for an extended period of time (including an Impreza of the same vintage) and this is by far the best experience I've had operating a manual. It slides into gear smoothly, and the gearshift seats securely (unlike in certain past vehicles). Now, the elephant in the room: Suzuki exited the North American auto market most of a decade ago. They still have dealers that sell stuff like motorcycles, ATV's, and outboard motors, but they don't sell cars here anymore. I have, so far, not had any trouble finding parts (a lot of the replaceable stuff like oil filters are pretty standard), but I am also in a relatively-major metropolitan area in the Eastern United States, so that experience may not be typical. If you like this car and are thinking about getting one, ask around at your area's repair shops about part availabilty for Suzuki's before you commit. Of course, that is also why these cars tend to be available for not-a-lot-of-money. With that said, if you're looking for an inexpensive, capable, and fun small car, I cannot recommend the SX4 highly enough.

  • A very reliable car.

Handles just fine at highway speeds with a very solid feel. Anyone claiming otherwise may have bought a car with poor tires, bad alignment or another issue.

  • The most difficult car to get repaired

This car is a great commuting car. But a few things to note- It is highly unstable driving on the highway of speeds 75-80 mph. It becomes very wobbly. Getting this car repaired is a complete nightmare! Suzuki made things very difficult by making it hard to get to simple things. Such as the alternator it is located at the bottom of the car. I had to take off the axle to get to it. So expect to pay $$$ just for labor.

  • Best value for $

Sedan has fold down rear seats, which makes it "hatchback-like" & 10' lumber fits easily. Best 6 speed I've ever driven. Never needed repair, just drives & drives. Never found a better vehicle.

  • Great runaround vehicle

Owned since brand new, very reliable and goes like a tank in the snow with studded tires. Transmission quality on this vehicle is above average. Takes off pretty slow , changing oil is a pain the first time due to lack of space. Rear axle seals leaked at 67000 miles but were replaced under powertrain warranty. Changed the differential fluids and tranny fluids regularly and I expect this car to give me over 200k miles. Paint job was not very good, but no rust anywhere so far in the northeast. Parts are plentiful and cheap.

  • Very reliable little car. Love the CVT.

We bought the SX4 back when gas was real high. It has been so reliable that were going to keep it even though were used to big cars.
