I purchased a 2024 Volvo S60 expecting the refinement, safety, and quality that Volvo’s reputation suggests. Unfortunately, my ownership experience has been filled with recurring issues that competitors in this segment simply do not exhibit. Driving Performance Problems: Brakes: Non-linear response; heavy grab under 30 mph without increased pedal pressure; abrupt stopping at the end of braking. Acceleration Lag: Noticeable hesitation when turning into traffic, which can feel unsafe. Auto Stop-Start: Harsh jolt when releasing brake pedal, even with gentle pressure; system activates in extreme temperatures, reducing climate control effectiveness. Technology & Electronics: Key Recognition: Sometimes fails to detect the key at startup or unlocking. Infotainment System: Sporadic Bluetooth connection (often fails to connect at all), random screen blackouts, sound dropouts (including turn signal audio), and radio turning on without input. Instrument Cluster: Fuel economy and range readings are often inaccurate; large, unexplained swings between trips. Build Quality Issues: Rear right vibration and squeaking near the exhaust. Door locks occasionally fail to release when handle is pulled or when using the fob. Dealer Response: Despite documenting these issues, my service technician stated the car is “operating as designed.” This is unacceptable for a premium sedan and well below the refinement of direct competitors like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Acura TLX, and Mercedes C-Class. Bottom Line: While the S60 has attractive styling, safety features, and a comfortable cabin, the driving experience and technology execution are far behind segment leaders. These issues undermine confidence and enjoyment, making it difficult to recommend this vehicle.

After needing to replace my Infiniti Q40, I landed on the stylish Volvo S60. Coming from a 350bhp sports sedan, the S60 feels more like a smooth touring sedan rather than a performance machine—it’s a different breed, a more refined one. Comfort & Space At 6'1" and 240lbs, head clearance and shoulder width are non-negotiable for me when choosing a car. Many options, like the BMW 3 Series (which made me hit my head on entry/exit) and the Toyota Camry (too narrow in the shoulders), didn’t make the cut. The S60, however, offers ample leg and shoulder room, and the seats are incredibly comfortable. Performance The S60 is quick and smooth. My Infiniti was undeniably fast, and while the Volvo doesn’t compare in raw power, I never feel underwhelmed. It’s got enough pep to confidently pass traffic, and—based on experience—it’ll leave an X3 or X5 behind at the merge lane. 😄 Interior & Features The cabin design is sleek, luxurious, and built with high-quality materials. Everything feels solid, and the cupholders fit two large Owala or Yeti containers—something my Infiniti couldn’t manage. However, storage space is lacking; there’s no dedicated sunglass holder, and finding good spots for keys and wallets isn't ideal. Fuel Efficiency Fuel economy is impressive. Even with a heavy foot, I easily get 25mpg mixed, thanks to the mild hybrid setup. The power assist eliminates turbo lag, making acceleration smooth and responsive—while you won’t rival a true sports sedan, you won’t feel sluggish either. Driving Experience & Safety Highway cruising is effortless, and overtaking slow drivers is no problem. The self-driving functionality is excellent—on par with Subaru's Eyesight system, which outperforms Acura, Nissan/Infiniti, Toyota, and GM in my experience. Tech & Infotainment The Android Auto Operating System is sleek, and voice commands with "Hey Google" respond quickly. Google Maps, climate controls, and music apps like XM and Spotify work seamlessly. Unfortunately, it doesn’t cooperate with Waze or some other apps, which is disappointing. Apple CarPlay is available, but oddly, Android Auto isn't—a baffling omission. Supposedly, an update is already available, but my car won't update ITA so it requires a service center visit, so I’ll find out in about 9,000 miles when I take it in. A few frustrations: - No split-screen on the entertainment console—you must choose between the map or the radio, not both. - The gorgeous dash display will either show Google Maps with navigation or… nothing. Seems like a missed opportunity. - Heated seats aren’t standard, even in the Plus model. This car comes with a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, and air purification, yet somehow, no heated seats? - The phone app for remote start is quick and easy, but you can’t adjust climate settings, which is frustrating. Final thoughts: Overall, I really like this car—it’s smooth, comfortable, stylish, and incredibly safe. The price is competitive, making it more affordable than some standard sedans. Sadly, 2025 will be its last production year in the U.S., but since the engine and drivetrain match the V60 and XC60—and the model remains available overseas—parts availability shouldn’t be a concern.
