(upbeat music) <v Announcer>Cars.com Auto Review. Hi, I'm Mike Hanley with cars.com. Infiniti stepped into the high performance sub-brand last year with the debut of the IPL line in the IPL G Coupe, and now there's a new convertible version for 2013.
But overall, the step is a cautious one because the car only offers marginally increased performance compared to the regular G convertible, and you still have to deal with all the shortcomings of this convertible body style. The exterior design changes for the IPL G convertible are pretty subtle, but they're centered mostly up front with this unique front bumper that has a step look from the upper and lower part. I'm not a huge fan of the design. I kind of prefer what the regular G convertible has. In addition, there are also unique 19-inch wheels. The other big change is around back as the dual exhaust system gets bigger exhaust outlets. It also has a unique sound, but it's kind of droning in everyday driving. The subtle changes continue in the IPL G's cabin. It comes standard with leather, climate-controlled sports seats that have an IPL logo on the backrest and also red stitching. There's also red stitching on the steering wheel, and overall, this is a pretty well-equipped model as it comes standard with navigation system, backup camera, Bose stereo, and aluminum trim. Unlike some other high-performance sub-brands like BMW's M and Mercedes AMG, the IPL G convertible sticks with the same engine that's found in a regular G convertible. It's a 3.7 liter V6, but it makes more horsepower. It's now rated at 343 horsepower and 273 pounds feet of torque. But overall the driving experience, the power is still pretty similar to what you'd find in a regular G convertible sport version. And what's kind of perplexing is that this performance model isn't offered with a manual transmission. It only has an automatic, but you can get a manual in the regular G convertible. A number of the shortcomings of the regular G convertible are still present in this IPL model, and it includes body flex, which is really significant. And you can hear it as the top rattles when it's up and you're crossing over bumpy roads. The other is that the top operation isn't the smoothest. When you're putting the top back up, the trunk lid slams down as it finishes its operation. And overall, it takes about 30 seconds up or down to operate the top. But the biggest shortcoming is really in terms of trunk space as the top, when it's down takes up nearly all your cargo room. What's left is really a comically small opening. I mean, you might be able to fit a yoga mat into this little space here or something, but no suitcases. The price premium for the IPL G convertible is about $8,000 more than a G 37 sport convertible. And while you get a lot of features in this car, I wish Infiniti had devoted more attention to giving it a more unique powertrain. <v Announcer>For more car related news, go to cars.com or our blog kickingtires.net.
