(car hood shuts) (country music) (car brakes) Hi, I'm Kelsey Mays for cars.com. Here at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and Chevrolet does not want you to call this Corvette a Stingray.
That's because this is the new Corvette Z06, and that's what it's gonna be called. Not the Stingray Moniker that GM attached to the seventh generation Corvette. Let's check it out. GM says the new Corvette Z06 targeted the outgoing Corvette ZR1 in terms of performance. Definitely looks the part here. There's new things like a new front splitter, a new front wheel opening spats, a unique carbon fiber hood here with larger openings for the engine. You get along the side here, there's a package called the Z07 package, which takes the Z06 to another level. Things include a rear spoiler here. You can actually see through. There's a clear section here, so you can see through the tail of the car. It gives the car the most down force of any car that GM says it has ever tested from any manufacturer. In fact, the Corvette C7R race car didn't require a lot In fact, the Corvette C7R race car didn't require a lot of additional down force work, GM says, in order to become a full on race car. Pretty intense. Take a look. Corvette Z06 gets larger disc brakes than the base Corvette Stingray. It also gets six piston front calipers versus the four piston calipers in that base Corvette Stingray. There's carbon ceramic brakes in the Z07 package here. There's carbon ceramic brakes in the Z07 package here. Even higher performance levels there. Let's talk about what's under the hood. The last Z06 had a monster V8. A seven liter 505 horsepower, 470 pound feet of torque engine. Its successor has a smaller V8. It's a 6.2 liter engine, but now it's supercharged, and the supercharger and the intercooler cradle actually between the cylinder banks of the V8. It's only about an inch taller overall, GM says, versus the 6.2 liter non-supercharged V8 in the Corvette Stingray. Not a big difference there in engine size, but a big difference in power. At least 625 horsepower, 635 pounds-feet of torque, GM says. At least 625 horsepower, 635 pounds-feet of torque, GM says. Seven speed manual, or for the first time in a Z06, an eight speed automatic transmission, GM says. Now, it's an old fashioned torque converter automatic, but GM claims it's a very, very fast unit. In fact, it shifts faster than the dual clutch automatic in a Porsche 911. No doubt, a Corvette ZR1 will follow, but for now, the Z06 is the top dog among the Corvette family for the seventh generation, and it's a really, really quick one at that. The last Z06 thundered through the quarter mile in just 11.7 seconds. GM says that without even the proper tires, when they took prototypes of the new Z06 out to its proving grounds, it actually beat track times of the old ZR1. of the old ZR1. Definitely exciting there. We're excited to drive it closer to the cars on sale date in early 2015. (engine revving)
