About the video
Move over, M550i. BMW's new 2018 M5 is the new top dog in the 5 Series lineup. We got a closer look at the performance sedan at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Transcript
The current generation BMW five series has an M car called the M550i, but it doesn't have a full top dog M5 high-performance sedan until now. Welcome the redesign of the M5 a car with more power and hunkered down styling versus the M550.
We'll start with the styling. In back, you can tell the M5 apart because it has quad exhaust tips here instead of dual tips on the M550. There's also some more body colored portions to the lower bumper versus the darker portions on the 550. The roof here: carbon fiber reinforced plastic. A first for the M5, though other M cars also have carbon fiber roofs. Along the sides, 19 inch wheels are standard. Twenties are optional. Massive 15.6 inch front brakes with six piston calipers. 15.7 inch carbon ceramic brakes are optional. And all of that is to stop the power under the hood. Now like the 550, the M5 has a 4.4 liter twin turbo V8 engine, but here it's good for 600 horsepower, 553 pounds feet of torque. Considerably more power than the 550's 456 horse power, 480 pounds feet of torque. It puts power down through an eight speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. Now don't cry foul just yet, M5 fans. This is the first M5 with all wheel drive, but BMW says it portions a lot more power to the rear wheels. It's got a differential. It can distribute power between the left and the right rear wheels, and there's even a mode, if you're an expert driver and just want to drift around a lot, to only send power to the rear wheels for true rear wheel drive handling. Put it all together, and BMW says the new M5 hits 60 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds versus 3.9 for the M550. Now inside the M5 has highly bolstered seats that are actually pretty comfortable despite that. Big bolsters here at the shoulders and an illuminated M5 logo at the base of the head restraint. Now their steering wheel has shift pedals as you'd expect. It also has M1 and M2 buttons inside of them. What those do is they actually change the transmission and engine response, the suspension, the all wheel drive, the electronic stability system, even the head-up display to predetermined settings that you dial in beforehand. Now all of this is going to cost you because the new M5 starts around $103,600. That's nearly $30,000 more than the M550i. You can pick up one of these when it hits dealerships in spring of 2018.
