About the video
Pickuptrucks.com's Mark Williams interviews Daniel Cohen about the 2019 GMC Sierra's ProGrade Trailering system.
We're here with the 2019 Sierra 1500, that has a new trailering package that has all sorts of technology smashed into this new vehicle. And with us is our expert from GM. Give me your name and your exact title. Hi, my name is Daniel Cohen.
I'm the assistant program engineering manager for the 2019 GMC Sierra, and I also architected all the trailering features on this vehicle. <v Mark>Wow. Okay. We want you to just be very laser focused for this video so we're in an SLT. We're in a GMC SLT. With the trailering package. Pro-grade trailering, our new GMC package for trailering, yes. Okay, and what technology, what can you show me that we can access? Sure, let me walk you through, let's start with cameras, right? So you open up your camera app. First thing you're going to see 270 degree view around the vehicle, as well as a dynamic guideline that all you do is you turn your steering wheel, it will adjust. <v Mark>It will guide you. <v Daniel>Right, and you line that up with your hitch and you can back right up to the hitch. <v Mark>So, 270, so there's no camera in the front on this particular package. <v Daniel>Right. We've replaced that camera that would be in the front with a camera that you can place on the back of your trailer. A high definition, digital low-latency camera. <v Mark>So low latency, meaning it's what you're seeing is exactly what's happening. <v Daniel>Right. What we found is that sometimes in these after-market camera systems, the latency is so high that you actually see what you backed into right after you backed into it. So we went for ultra low latency on this product. <v Daniel>Okay, so we have cameras gives us vision, right and left and behind. <v Daniel>Once we get back there, you can zoom in on the hitch. Once you get perfect alignment, we know you're backing up to a trailer, your next shift to park, we set that park break for you. So it doesn't roll forward or back anymore. You hold that perfect alignment. <v Mark>So it's got an electronic push button parking brake that helps you to be more confident when you're actually trying to park your trailer <v Daniel>Absolutely, help you go faster, you don't need that second person back there waving their hands around and telling you, how much more you needed to back up. You can see right here. <v Mark>So if I go back to home out of this, and then I hit trailering, what's all this information? <v Daniel>So we start off, we have a checklist. We tell you exactly how to hitch to the GMC Sierra, as well as provide you pictures that you can swipe through step-by-step. You can add custom items to this, if let's say it's your boat, you want to save it, "Hey, let's put gas in the boat." "Let's put some adult beverages in the cooler." We can actually save that right there. Then, we also offer views that show you average fuel economy with that trailer. Your trans temp. <v Mark>So it's only factoring in fuel economy when you're towing. <v Daniel>That trailer, that specific trailer. We have individual trailer profiles. <v Mark>How many different profiles? <v Daniel>We have five trailer profiles available on the 2019. <v Mark>Okay. Talk to me about connection. <v Daniel>So in our connections, what we do is we alert you if we detect that a trailer light outage has occurred, and we also try to help you diagnose if it's the connector or the trailer lights on the back of the trailer. And we had the ability to start a light test right here. So you start that light test and it flashes the lights in a known sequence. And that way you can get out, walk around your vehicle, make sure that all the lights are working and you don't need a second person. <v Mark>You don't have to have somebody standing behind the trailer side, right turn, left turn, you can actually just walk around yourself. <v Daniel>Absolutely, so remember I told you that our pro-grade trailer system might even save your marriage. That's because you no longer need maybe your significant other to help you do all these tasks. <v Mark>That's fantastic. Okay. Next one. Then we also offer our trailer tire pressure and temperature monitoring system, right on the center stack screen here. And that's because we know that temperature tends to spike right before trailer tire blowout. <v Mark>So it's part of the package that you offer sensors that we can load onto... <v Daniel>Absolutely. We offer those sensors. <v Mark>And it's delivering you PSI and temperature of each tire. <v Daniel>That's correct. <v Mark>That's fantastic. <v Daniel>And then we also track your mileage. Now, why would you want to track your mileage? Because we actually offer you custom maintenance items to remind you to maintain your trailer. One of the most common reasons for trailer troubles is because people forget to maintain them. So we remind you to do that either based on time or mileage. <v Mark>Fantastic. I love the fact that you're stuffing tons of information to equip the consumer, the guy who's going to be towing with all sorts of information that essentially leads to a safer experience, right? Overall, absolutely. And then, while you're driving down the road, you want to be able to see down the side of the trailer, as well as behind the trailer. So this is camera, what it looks like right behind the thing right there. <v Daniel>Yeah, so you can see that as a split screen. So you see down both sides and behind the trailer all at the same time, push that button again. Now you're seeing just down the sides, push it again. There's a full screen view of just behind the trailer, high definition and digital. <v Mark>Now, I know we haven't gone through a thorough discussion of this whole thing. There's some very cool things that we'll want to discover when we get a chance to take this vehicle out towing, but thank you for your time. I appreciate that. <v Daniel>No problem. Thank you. <v Mark>If you want to know more about the 2019 Sierra half ton, go to pickuptrucks.com.
