We're here at the 2022 New York International Auto Show with the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale. This doubles Alfa Romeo's SUV lineup to two, and also represents the brand's first foray into electrification.
In addition to a gas powered turbocharge two-liter, four-cylinder engine, the Tonale is also available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Let's check it out. The Tonale shares its styling with the 2019 concept that debuted in Geneva and the larger Stelvio. It's got the beautiful Alfa Romeo signature grill. Good luck figuring out where to put a front license plate. And you also get these signature three-element LED headlights, which also include cool details like Alfa's signature Cloverleaf logo and an Alfa Romeo script over here. Going back from the headlights, you get what Alfa calls a GT line, which runs all the way to the rear, where the taillights also have three elements and are connected by an additional strip of lighting that runs across the lift gate. Sitting in the driver's seat of the Tonale, you get this nice 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument panel and a 10.25 inch touchscreen display running Uconnect 5. Uconnect 5 includes standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Amazon Alexa connectivity. And since you do get those wireless connections, there's wireless device charging here, as well as a USB-A and USB-C port. You also get a nice host of physical controls for things like climate and audio, and in true Alfa fashion, this is very much a cockpit feel, very sporty feeling, which also means you get these almost comically large shift paddles. My biggest disappointment honestly is that this nice little Italian flag logo here isn't actually a functional button. Materials, quality wise and again, this is an auto show, so materials quality may not be up to production quality just yet. Things feel nice, but a little bit behind some of its German competitors like say, the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA, GLB. The backseat of the Tonale is actually surprisingly roomy. My knees are a little high, but I have decent leg room behind my preferred front seating position. And I have decent shoulder room and decent headroom as well. In North America the Tonale will come with two powertrain choices, both with standard all wheel drive. The first is a gas powered, two liter turbocharge four cylinder engine making 256 horsepower and that's paired to a nine speed automatic transmission. The plug-in hybrid version pairs, a 1.3 liter turbocharge, four cylinder gas engine with a 90 kilowatt electric motor and 15.5 kilowatt hour battery pack making 272 total system horsepower. Alfa Romeo says the plug-in hybrid should get over 30 miles of all electric range, but EPA figures have not been released for either the plugin or gas versions. We're looking forward to driving the Tonale, particularly the plugin hybrid version. Standing here, it's an impressive small SUV and a welcome addition to Alfa Romeo's lineup. Pricing information should be available closer to when orders open in the fourth quarter of 2022 and deliveries should follow in the first quarter of 2023.
