Transcript

We're at the 2025 Detroit Auto Show, and we have this to see. This is the new Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America. Now, what's this thing all about? What's a Ford Mustang GTD? Let me walk you through it.
(upbeat music) This is basically the limited edition version of the limited edition Mustang that is the Mustang GTD. It's a special high performance version of the Mustang that Ford created to lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes. The first American brand ever to do that with an American car, a production vehicle I should say. What we have here is the Mustang GTD that's got a couple of special tweaks to it in order to make it look a little bit more special. It's a celebration of American ingenuity and American spirit, and they've kind of tied in a little bit of a theme with the original 500 and 600 mile per hour land speed record breaker, Craig Breedlove, his Spirit of America vehicles were the ones that broke those initial records. So they've taken some of the ideas of those initial land speed vehicles and brought it here to the Mustang GTD. Now, there's a couple of things that have changed. First of all, we have this performance white paint, and up the top you've got two racing stripes in lightning blue and race red. They go all the way up the vehicle and towards the back. You've also got some new options for the mirror caps and the huge wing in the back as well. You can have these mirror caps in either race red or in exposed carbon. And on the big wing in the back you've got the race red, no winglets on the side, plus some big Mustang script across the back underside of the wing in case you weren't quite sure what it was that just blew past you on the Nürburgring, it'll say Mustang. You could have a good look at that. Now the normal GTD has things like the magnesium wheels, almost entirely carbon fiber body, a carbon fiber drive shaft, and it's got a 5.2 liter supercharged V8 pumping out 815 horsepower sent to the rear wheels via a carbon fiber drive shaft and an eight speed dual clutch automatic transmission. So it's got the goods to go really quite quickly and hopefully I'll get to try one someday to see just how fast that is. The GTD Spirit of America package also brings some changes to the inside of the Mustang as well, and they mostly have to do with these sports seats. There are Recaro seats, but they have very different upholstery. You've got these leather faux suede dynamica inserts with this red gradient striped through the middle. You've got white leather exterior bits and victory blue stitching all throughout the seats and the steering wheel and the dashboard. You have a couple things that are now standard for this model as well, such as the paddle shifters, which are actually 3D printed titanium, and it might look a little bit different in here than your normal Mustang because there's no back seat at all and there's no trunk either. The trunk area has been taken up by the modified rear suspension that's about as different from a normal Mustang as you could probably get. Now this thing, the GTD is starch life at the Flat Rock plant in Michigan where all Mustang start life and then it gets shipped out to Markham, Ontario to a company called Multimatic. And that name might sound familiar because those are the folks that did the Ford GT supercar, and this thing really does have more in common with that Ford GT supercar than with the four cylinder convertible Mustang you rented in Hawaii last year for vacation. Now, if this sounds like the absolute ultimate awesome Mustang and it pretty much is, there's a couple things you need to keep in mind. First of all, this thing is going to be made in very limited quantities and it's going to cost over $300,000. Which yeah, is again more in line with the Ford GT supercar. But even if you have that kind of scratch that doesn't necessarily guarantee that you're gonna be able to buy one because you have to submit an application to Ford in order to be considered to be allowed to buy a Mustang GTD. Now, that's a whole nother process and we won't get into that because it is fairly complicated and who knows exactly what the criteria are for being selected to get a new Mustang GTD, regardless of its spirit of America or not. But we're looking forward to seeing what this thing is gonna be able to do on tracks all over the world, and you know, you can actually take one home and put it in your driveway afterwards. That's just really kind of extraordinary. To learn more about the new 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, Spirit of America, USA, USA, you can go to cars.com/news. (upbeat music)
