Introducing the winner of the Cars.com Best Pickup Truck Award, the 2022 Ford Maverick.
For too long, a small pickup truck could not be had in the world's biggest pickup market, but the Maverick recaptures some of the old Ford Ranger's magic and presents truck shoppers with a truly appealing option. The appeal starts with a novel standard powertrain, a gas electric hybrid with a 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine that makes 191 horsepower and 155 pound feet of torque and that powers the front wheels. It's good for a healthy 42 miles per gallon rating in the city, but our own testing has routinely seen more. <v Brian>If you'd rather have more power, the optional turbocharged two-liter four-cylinder makes 250 horsepower and 277 pounds feet of torque and pairs with a conventional eight-speed automatic. Properly equipped, it'll tow up to 4,000 pounds, enough for a small camper or you can load the bed with as much as 1500 pounds of gear and either power train still pulls strongly But it's the details that really sell us on the Maverick. The interior's industrial chic styling makes you forget that it's filled with inexpensive plastics. The rear stereo speakers are in the pillars instead of the doors and that helps maximize space. The center console is super low, so your knees don't hit it. You can get a base trim level with steel wheels, but spec the more powerful engine and Ford includes QR codes throughout the truck that point to instructions for do-it-yourself bed dividers and they'll provide a 3D printer data file to let you make your own snap-in accessories. <v Brian>And on top of all that, it's a screaming value with a starting price in the low 20-thousands. It might just be the most widely appealing truck to come along in decades and easily, the Cars.com Best Pickup Truck of 2022.
