Ford Gets Jump on Detroit Auto Show With Mustang Shelby GT500 Tease


The “official” auto-show season may have kicked off just yesterday, but Ford’s ready to jump to January when the automaker plans to unveil its new 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500.

Instead of the new model, on display at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show is one of the car’s forebears, the 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. Under that is a host of cards outlining the history of the previous Shelby Mustangs, along with a clue: a sign that says “GT500 1.14.19,” the date the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit opens.

While the Ford stand gives nothing else away, the teasers have been leaking out ahead of the car’s reveal. Ford has confirmed the new model will be “loaded with the most venom ever,” featuring a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 good for 700-plus horsepower. The automaker expects it to be the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever.
With those kinds of numbers, the new Mustang Shelby GT500 will be poised to take on its main rivals, the 650-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE and 797-hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye.
