Mere days on from a sizable recall for the smaller Cherokee over power liftgates and, more recently, a recall over a missing dashboard airbag warning label in its Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, Jeep is recalling more than 89,000 examples of the latter two SUVs — this time over faulty steering columns.
Nearly 89,400 model-year 2022-23 Grand Cherokee and model-year 2021-23 Grand Cherokee L SUVs are affected. An incorrectly assembled steering-column intermediate shaft may disconnect from the U-joint, resulting in a loss of steering control and increasing the risk of a crash.
To resolve the problem, dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the intermediate shaft and assembly parts for free. Jeep parent automaker Stellantis will begin notifying owners July 7, but those with further questions in the meantime can contact Stellantis at 800-853-1403 (the number for this recall is 58A), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
