Which Trim Level of the 2023 Toyota 4Runner Should You Buy?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner may be a lingering example of the past, but the rugged off-roader still plays a role in Toyota’s SUV sales machine. This is due to its impressive off-road capability as well as its tried and true approach to giving SUV buyers what they want. The 2023 4Runner brings new colors and introduces a 40th Anniversary trim to the lineup, but which one is right for both your budget and your family? Read on to find out the details of each and decide for yourself.

SR5, SR5 Premium
The base SR5 model is the value-focused member of the 4Runner family. It comes with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, keyless entry with push-button start, and LED headlights, taillights and foglights. Toyota’s Safety Sense P system is also standard and includes lane departure warning, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams. The base powertrain is a 270-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission that comes with standard rear-wheel drive and starts at $40,140 (all pricing includes a $1,335 destination charge, up from $1,215 for 2022); four-wheel drive is available for $1,875 extra.
An SR5 Premium is also available and adds equipment including leatherette seats and heated mirrors; it starts at $43,200 for RWD and $45,075 for 4WD.
TRD Sport
The front fascia of the TRD Sport is altered slightly from the SR5 and comes with a lower bar that houses the foglights and a color keyed hood scoop to distinguish it from the more serious TRD Off-Road, but the major difference here is the X-REAS Sport Enhancement suspension system, which aims to give the SUV better handling manners. A built-in Wi-Fi hot spot that offers up to 2 gigabytes of performance is also standard. The TRD Sport starts at $43,000 for a standard RWD model and $44,875 for 4WD.
TRD Off-Road
The TRD Off-Road, which starts at $43,985, is where the 2023 4Runner’s trail-ready DNA becomes more apparent thanks to its standard crawl control and terrain management systems. TRD Off-Road models also receive a TRD adorned shift knob and rubberized floormats. Like the SR5, the TRD Off-Road also has a $46,565 TRD Off-Road Premium variant that adds more equipment to the trim, including three USB charging ports and red TRD lettering on the front seat head restraints.
40th Anniversary Special Edition
A major change for 2023 is the arrival of the 40th Anniversary Special Edition. This $47,705 trim celebrates the 4Runner’s 40 years of production and comes with several distinct styling features, including 17-inch bronze-colored alloy wheels, a bronze-colored tailgate badge, body color front grille and wild heritage stripes on the sides. The interior also features bronze accents and 40th anniversary logos on the seats and floormats.
Limited
The Limited is the most luxurious 4Runner you can buy and comes with heated and cooled leather front seats, a power sliding moonroof, 20-inch six-spoke alloy wheels and dual-zone climate control. The Limited trim starts at $49,375 for the RWD model and $51,410 for 4WD.
TRD Pro
The range-topping TRD Pro is the ultimate 4Runner for those that want a machine that can conqueror the fiercest of trails; it starts at $54,605. Unlike other 4Runner models, the 4WD-only TRD Pro benefits from several revisions aimed at improving its off-road manners. Beefy skid plates help protect the vulnerable internals from damage, and 17-inch TRD wheels hide Fox internal bypass shocks to help keep the 4Runner composed when climbing obstacles.
