Things took a turn for the worse as a federal safety recall last week shed light on malfunctioning turn signals and high beams in some 142,000 Ram pickup trucks. As we noted in our report on the recall — which tops Cars.com’s weekly countdown of most read news stories — affected vehicles span a large swath of the current lineup, including model-year 2023 Ram 1500s and 2023-24 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks.

In the malfunctioning models, the steering column control module could activate the high-beam headlights when the driver uses the turn signal, or vice versa, and the turn signal self-canceling feature may not function properly — confusing the driver or impairing visibility for other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the steering column control module for free. On a more positive note — at least, in part — our rapid-fire roundup of the pros and cons of the updated-for-2024 Volkswagen Atlas runs a distant second place on this week’s countdown. On the bright side are nicely upgraded, soft-touch cabin materials in the places you need them most, in addition to improved infotainment displays; a return to physical steering-wheel buttons versus haptic controls; the new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine imbuing the SUVs with improved acceleration over even the outgoing six-cylinder and fuel savings over the outgoing four-cylinder; a comfortable and controlled ride; expanded standard features; and a bigger options menu that includes a head-up display and a 360-degree camera system for tight-space maneuvering. Our reviewers took a dim view, however, of how the interior appointments get cheaper as you get lower; hides frequently used functions inside the touchscreen display; and increases in price by more than $2,600 for the base trim.
