For the third time this year, Ford has issued a major recall over the failure of a critical safety component: the legally mandated backup camera. This time, the issue affects more than 169,200 SUVs and vans.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2022-23 Ford Transit vans and model-year 2021 Bronco SUVs, as well as model-year 2020-23 Lincoln Aviator and model-year 2018-21 Navigator SUVs. (Ford is Lincoln’s parent company.) The backup camera or 360-degree view camera system (if thus equipped) may not display a rearview image when the vehicle is placed in Reverse, reducing the driver’s rear visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

As a fix, dealers will simply replace the rearview camera and update the software and wiring, as necessary, for free. The automaker will begin notifying owners of the risk Oct. 2, but those with further questions in the meantime can call Ford at 866-436-7332 (Ford’s number for this recall is 23S48), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
