2020 Corvette Convertible, Anyone? The Answer Is Easy, But the Top Is Hard

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray made a splash this summer when it debuted as the first-ever production mid-engine Corvette coupe. Just a few months later, Chevrolet has added to the eighth-generation Corvette’s list of firsts by making it the first-ever retractable hardtop Corvette convertible. Corvette coupes for a long time have had a removable roof panel — and the C8 is no exception in that regard — but this is the first convertible Corvette that isn’t a soft-top.

The standard hardtop is painted the same color as the rest of the car, but an optional Carbon Flash-painted roof and nacelles (the raised bodywork behind occupants’ heads) are also available. Chevrolet claims the top will retract in as little as 16 seconds and at speeds up to 30 mph. When the top is down, a divider window between the nacelles can be raised or lowered as needed to reduce noise and turbulence inside the cabin.

Convertibles are typically heavier than their coupe counterparts, and this is no exception — the specific weight increase for the C8 convertible is 77 pounds. The powertrain is identical to the C8 coupe, producing 495 horsepower and 470 pounds-feet of torque from the 6.2-liter LT2 V-8. The convertible also gets the same eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Chevrolet claims the convertible offers near-identical performance to the coupe.

That sameness also applies to storage, as the C8 convertible has a special storage compartment for the roof that does not infringe upon the rear storage compartment. The trunk will be able to hold the two golf bags the Corvette must accommodate to appease its target demographic, and there’s still the additional frunk for carry-on-sized and smaller items.
