2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1: This Ain’t No Electric SUV


For fans of iconic muscle cars, few names conjure up as much passion and pride as the Ford Mustang Mach 1, so much so that when Ford originally announced it planned on calling its all-new four-door, Mustang-inspired electric SUV the Mach 1, those same fans became incensed — and they let Ford know about it.
While that vehicle eventually became the Mustang Mach-E, the Mach 1 moniker will again be used on a Ford vehicle … but rest assured it’s not a station wagon or a pickup truck or a small cute-ute crossover. The Mach 1 name is going on a proper Mustang again — as the universe intended.

While Ford didn’t announce many details about the new model, it did offer up some clues as to where it would fit in the overall pantheon of Mustang models. Ford said the new Mach 1 will be powered by the 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 found under the hood of the Mustang GT, not the larger flat-plane crank 5.2-liter engine offered in the Mustang Shelby GT350 or the supercharged version seen in the Shelby GT500; that means it’s likely to slot above the 460-horsepower GT and even the 480-hp Bullitt model. Dave Pericak, director of Ford Icons, called it “the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever” in a statement, boasting that it would claim the top spot in the lineup of 5.0-liter Mustangs.
That means it’s likely to be expensive, too, with the Bullitt currently the priciest of the 5.0-liter cars, ringing in at a starting price of $48,900 (prices include destination). They have room for pricing it generously, as well, as the next most expensive Mustang is the GT350 at $61,635.

Look for the new Mustang Mach 1 sometime later this year, as Ford said that it will be seen in 2020 as a ’21 model.
