The Honda Civic knows its target audience. It’s still among the shrinking pool of affordable sedans suited for young drivers, but even more scarce are affordable hatchbacks — which is why all eyes will be on the redesigned 2022 Civic Hatchback when it’s revealed later this month. To drum up excitement for the reveal, Honda teased a shadowy photo of the new Civic Hatchback, along with a few tipoffs on its styling, transmission, production location and arrival date.

Honda says the new Civic Hatchback features a “European-inspired” exterior but remains tight-lipped on specifics. We squinted hard and still couldn’t make out much from the photo shared by the automaker; the profile of the hatchback only reveals a sloped, fastback-inspired roofline.

In addition to new styling, Honda says the hatchback will have improved five-door versatility versus the sedan and will feature an available six-speed manual transmission. The six-speed manual is currently offered only on the Sport and Sport Touring trims, with a standard continuously variable automatic standard on the rest of the trims.

Despite its Euro-inspired digs, the Civic Hatchback will for the first time be produced stateside at Honda’s Greensburg, Ind., manufacturing facility. An arrival at dealerships is expected later this year.
