In the last six months, affiliated automakers Hyundai and Kia have recalled over 300,000 vehicles for an issue that could put occupants at serious risk for injury: exploding seat belt pretensioners. Hyundai is once again adding to the running list, as is its luxury brand Genesis.

Affected vehicles include nearly 15,000 model-year 2023 Genesis Electrified G80s and model-year 2021-22 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrids and 2022-23 Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrids. The issue involves the front driver- or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners, which could explode upon deployment due to excessive pressure in the pretensioner pipe. As a result, metal fragments could project into the cabin and injure occupants.
To fix the issue, dealers will secure the seat belt pretensioners with a cap for free. Hyundai will begin notifying owners Dec. 30, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 855-371-9460 (Hyundai’s number for this recall is 238/011G), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
