BMW Confirms Return of 8 Series Coupe
CARS.COM —BMW has confirmed the return of the storied 8 Series coupe for 2018 and released a teaser image showing the top new model’s sleek profile.

Harald Krueger, BMW board chairman, said at the company’s annual meeting that a concept version of the car providing a “looking ahead” at the production model will be unveiled May 26 at the posh Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the annual classic car show at Lake Como in Italy. The teaser image bears a strong resemblance to the Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe that BMW shown in 2013 at the same venue. Spy photos of the new 8 Series coupe prototypes in testing surfaced earlier.
“The BMW 8 Series coupe will build on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our lineup,” said Krueger in a statement. “The 8 Series coupe will underpin our claim to leadership in the luxury segment. I can tell you today that this will be a true luxury sports coupe.”
The new coupe revives the classic 8 Series from the 1990s and will take on the flagship coupes from other luxury makers, including the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe and the new 2018 Lexus LC 500. The announcement follows the demise of the 6 Series coupe, which quietly went out of production in February.
No other details were announced. The big coupe will slot above the 7 Series sedan — on which it likely will be based — and might share its powertrains, which include variants with a turbo-six, twin-turbo V-8, twin turbo V-12 and plug-in hybrid.
