Ford Launches EV Routing With Google Maps for Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning Owners

Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E owners with Android smartphones can now enjoy easier long-distance travel thanks to a new electric vehicle routing feature developed with Google. Integrating Google Maps navigation data and vehicle information such as battery charge level, the function helps drivers plan longer trips that necessitate one or more charging stops.

With their phone connected to Android Auto, drivers will now be able to view suggested charging stops along their route, battery life remaining upon arrival at each stop and their final destination, and estimated charge time at each plug right on their vehicle’s infotainment screen.
Ford EV owners with Apple phones already enjoy many of these capabilities when using Apple Maps through Apple CarPlay. For the time being, however, Android owners will have bragging rights over Apple users when it comes to one convenient function: When programmed charging locations are DC fast chargers, the communication between Google Maps and the vehicle enables en-route preconditioning of the battery. Preconditioning raises or lowers the battery’s temperature into the ideal range, enabling the charger to replenish the battery faster as soon as the car is plugged in. Apple Maps does not currently include preconditioning in Ford EVs, although we imagine that functionality is now high on Ford’s priorities list.
Ditto with integrating Tesla’s Supercharging network into Apple Maps. Now that Ford EVs can use Tesla’s charging network, the Android Auto route-planning feature includes Tesla Superchargers, the largest DC fast-charging network in the U.S. Currently, Apple Maps users need to use a different charging app to find Tesla chargers.
Announced last winter at CES in Las Vegas, Ford’s new EV routing feature is available to all F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E owners with Android phones. To use it, they need to download Ford’s current software update to their vehicle and make sure their phone has the latest version of Google Maps.
