Hyundai Reboots Ioniq Brand With All-New Electric SUV

The Hyundai Ioniq name has been around for a few years but has failed to generate much buzz — or sales — for the automaker. A reboot of the name and a new all-electric mission could help change that. Hyundai announced that the Ioniq name only will be used on all-electric vehicles — and more are coming, starting with a new electric SUV.

We first met the brand, which combines the words “ion” and “unique,” in 2016 when the Ioniq trio of hatchback vehicles launched; they included a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric car. However, sales of the trio haven’t been strong compared with other hybrids and plug-ins like the Toyota Prius.

The automaker confirmed it’ll be launching a range of numerically named EVs under the Ioniq brand — assigning even numbers to sedans and odd numbers to SUVs. All will be underpinned by the automaker’s Electric Global Modular Platform that Hyundai says will enable fast charging and ample range.

Hyundai says the brand’s new models will embody a design theme called Timeless Value, with vehicles’ styling based on past models. To wit, the automaker’s second new electric vehicle will be the Ioniq 6, a sedan based on the sleek Prophecy concept, which Hyunai predicts will arrive in 2022. Up next will be the Ioniq 7, a large SUV planned for an early 2024 launch.

The vehicles are part of a larger EV strategy; Hyundai says it aims to sell 1 million battery electric vehicles globally by 2025. Right now, aside from the Ioniq EV, Hyundai also offers an electric version of the Kona subcompact SUV.
