New (But Old): 4 2022 Models That Aren’t What They Seem

It’s a useful assumption that any car model’s suffix indicates a particular trim level or body style — the Limited on a Ford F-150, the Unlimited on a Jeep Wrangler, the Sport on a Honda Accord. Except when it isn’t: The Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Nissan Rogue Sport are all distinct SUVs from their sport-free siblings. The Nissan Rogue Select and Volkswagen Tiguan Limited reprised older-generation models sold alongside redesigned namesakes in the 2010s. Heck, the Ford F-150 Heritage did the same thing more than a decade before that.

The practice lives on for a handful of models today. Some are entirely separate vehicles, others warmed-over O.G. models sold in overlapping model years with contemporary namesakes. We’ll focus on the latter group with three pickup trucks and one SUV that automakers rolled into the 2022 model year: the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and related GMC Sierra 1500 Limited pickup trucks, plus the Ram 1500 Classic pickup and Jeep Grand Cherokee WK two-row SUV.

What’s the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Limited?

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Limited is a carryover of the 2019-21 Silverado 1500. Chevrolet will sell it for 2022, the same model year as the substantially updated 2022 Silverado 1500, though the latter truck won’t begin production until later in the 2022 calendar year. Don’t confuse the two. Although the 2022 Silverado 1500 isn’t a full redesign, its updates include new technologies and a much-needed interior overhaul. The Silverado 1500 Limited has none of that.

Strangely enough, GM played the same card a few years back with the Silverado 1500 LD, a carryover of the 2014-18 Silverado 1500 that Chevrolet sold for the 2019 model year alongside a then-redesigned Silverado 1500. The name may have changed, but the move remains the same for 2022: The Silverado 1500 Limited is a carryover of the old Silverado 1500 (in this case, the 2019-21 model), not a version of the updated 2022 Silverado 1500.

What’s the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited is a carryover of the 2019-21 Sierra 1500, not to be confused with a heavily updated 2022 Sierra 1500 that enters production later in the 2022 calendar year. In a potentially confusing repeat, the Sierra 1500 Limited reprises a warmed-over version of the outgoing truck. A few years back, the Sierra 1500 Limited carried the previous-generation Sierra 1500 into the 2019 model year to overlap a then-redesigned 2019 Sierra 1500. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited, meanwhile, is a carryover of the 2019-21 truck; it’s not a version of the updated 2022 Sierra 1500.

Though “Limited” might suggest a highfalutin’ trim level — it’s among the swankiest editions of the rival Ford F-150 and Ram 1500, after all — the designation for GMC often translates to old. The brand offered the Acadia Limited SUV for 2017 as a carryover from the 2007-16 Acadia, even as it was sold alongside the redesigned 2017 Acadia. Then there’s the aforementioned 2019 Sierra 1500 Limited. That makes the 2022 Sierra 1500 Limited the third such edition in the past six model years. The latest example is closely related to the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Limited, a corporate sibling under parent company GM.

What’s the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK is a carryover of the fourth-generation Grand Cherokee, a two-row SUV sold from the 2011-21 model years. It’s not to be confused with the redesigned, three-row 2021-22 Grand Cherokee L or the two-row 2022 Grand Cherokee’s new WL generation. Both of those ride a new, fifth-generation platform that’s distinct from the WK.

It’s not the first time Jeep has brought internal engineering designations to the forefront — from the Wrangler JK, a reference to the iconic SUV’s previous-generation JK platform that Jeep sold for the 2018 model year alongside a new JL-platform Wrangler, to the fourth-generation Grand Cherokee’s WK2 platform. (In yet more Jeep trivia, the third-generation Grand Cherokee’s platform, called WK1, preceded it from 2005-10, so the WK designation for 2022 is a sort of callback to both.) Shoppers named Andrew might deem the WK a reason to party anew, but make no mistake: It’s old.

What’s the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic?

The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic is a carryover from the previous-generation Ram 1500, marking the fourth model year it overlaps with the current-gen Ram 1500. Generally less expensive than the Ram 1500 — median new-vehicle pricing at Cars.com dealers in November 2021 was $41,376 for the 1500 Classic, well below the non-classic 1500’s $56,306 — the 1500 Classic sees frequent discounts even as incentives for all cars wane industrywide.
