Toyota Revives Hakone Special Edition for 2025 GR86

Light, playful and affordable, the Toyota GR86 is an ideal foundation for customization. Toyota has churned out numerous special editions featuring unique looks and light performance upgrades, and the 2025 GR86 Hakone Special Edition is the latest.

Resurrecting a limited-run variant’s color scheme and name from the car’s first generation, the 2025 GR86 Hakone Special Edition is finished in exclusive Ridge Green paint with satin-bronze wheels. It’s named for the Hakone Turnpike, a famed 8.7-mile twist of asphalt climbing into the mountains of Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture southwest of Tokyo. Like the 2024 GR86 Trueno Edition, the Hakone wears Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers as standard equipment.
Inside, the Hakone is upholstered in black synthetic suede with tan leather accents and stitching. Bronze accents on the shifter and puddle lamps projecting a GR86 silhouette backed by Mount Fuji finish off the unique look. Toyota will bring 860 Hakone Special Editions to the U.S.

Upgrades for the Whole Line
Toyota also made some small but meaningful upgrades to the rest of the GR86 line for the 2025 model year. The shocks and electric power steering have been retuned for improved road feel, and the throttle has been remapped for quicker response. Buyers choosing the six-speed manual transmission will enjoy sharper throttle blips during heel-toe downshifts.
Otherwise, the 2025 Toyota GR86 is unchanged from 2024. It’s still powered by a normally aspirated 228-horsepower, 2.4-liter flat-four engine making 184 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed manual is standard, and a six-speed automatic is available. The Hakone’s Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers are available on other trim levels, bundled as the Performance Package.
