Volvo Teases ES90, Its First Electric Sedan

Volvo has transitioned to SUVs as readily as any other brand, particularly in its electric-vehicle lineup, which is composed exclusively of the upright body style. But it will not be abandoning the sedans that forged its reputation — and the first of Volvo’s EV-era cars will be arriving soon. Called the ES90, the new EV is an electric companion to the gas-powered S90 flagship sedan.

Volvo has only released a few shadowy teaser photos, from which we can gather little more insight than that the ES90 will have styling and proportions similar to its internal combustion counterpart. But the brand has also provided some preliminary details on its battery and electrical systems, and they promise significant improvement over Volvo’s current lineup.

Juiced Up

The ES90 will be the first Volvo EV with an 800-volt electrical architecture. Eight-hundred-volt systems tend to be more efficient than 400-volt ones and can charge faster and produce more power. They also allow for smaller cables and lighter components; Volvo specifically notes the ES90’s drive motors weigh less than those in its other EVs.

While its electrical architecture is new, the ES90 may share mechanical components with the three-row EX90 electric SUV. The SUV is only available with dual-motor all-wheel drive, and although Volvo has only released range figures for an AWD ES90, a rear-drive version could be in the pipeline to provide for an even greater driving distance between charging stops.

Long Range, Short Charging Times

Volvo is holding U.S. specifications for a later date but says the ES90 will have a range of 435 miles as measured on the test cycle used to estimate range in Europe; official EPA testing here in the U.S. typically returns lower figures, however. Volvo also says the ES90 will be able to add as much as around 185 miles of range in 10 minutes and charge from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes on a 350-kilowatt DC fast charger.

Those are promising numbers, figures that would place the ES90 comfortably among the longest-range and fastest-charging EVs currently available. We’ll learn more and get a well-lit look at the complete ES90 when Volvo reveals it March 5.
