Swedish automaker Volvo's name is synonymous with safety. Although the company has more safety provisions than most automakers, they aren't all reflected in crash tests, where other brands often match and occasionally exceed a comparable Volvo model's ranking. Volvo’s recent resurgence started with the 2016 Volvo XC90 luxury SUV, and the model's design cues have spread to the rest of the lineup since then.

Volvo's SUVs include the subcompact XC40, compact XC60 and three-row XC90. On the sedan side, Volvo offers the S60 and S90. Both cars have wagon equivalents in the V60 and V90, respectively, and each wagon is available in all-terrain Cross Country form. Volvo's plug-in hybrid lineup is extensive; the drivetrain is offered in the S60, S90, V60, XC60 and XC90.

Volvo spun off the Polestar brand in 2017, and it focuses on electrified (hybrid and fully electric) vehicles. Volvo is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, and is a subsidiary of Chinese automaker Geely.
