Poor design of BMW X5 engine cooling system
I have a BMW X5 2012. Over the years, I got lots of problems, and found very expensive to repair it. BMW had fundamental problems in the X5 engine cooling design.

Great car, but unreliability is a headache.
I had a love/hate relationship with the BMW X5 2012. What I love is the performance of this car. It runs very smooth and has nice acceleration. For a V6 twin turbo, it definitely has good performance. The interior is stylish and quite comfortable, and the exterior is decent, but has style. The steering is sporty, but quite firm handling. Here is the ONLY thing I personally do not like about this car… the reliability. First off, the engine malfunction reduced power is such a common problem for this car. I would always have to pull over on the shoulder or get off the highway with this car to restart the engine so that the engine malfunction could go away. Then the belt tensioner needed replacement, engine problems, and just needs to spent on fixing the car. It would not always be unreliable though, there are many times that this car has gotten me to point A to point B, a few long trips and overall would be functioning well everyday, but the engine malfunction is a headache. However, on time oil change and proper maintenance does help to keep this car working well. Overall, the BMW X5 is a great car and very fun to drive, but because of certain unreliability problems like engine malfunction, it can be a headache to own.

2012 x5 35d ,180,000 no issues so far
2012 X5 35D. Over 180,000 Miles with very few repairs, I noticed some reviews on here seem to be for the gas version wich I wouldn't recommend due to repair /maintenance cost. I get around 24_25mpg with it plenty fast ,I also tow 2 motorcycles on a 3 rail bike trailer ,still get 22 mpg and you don't really even notice that the trailer and bikes are there, Comfy ,stylish , great torque fir a mid size suv. I plan to buy another and sell my current one around 200k.

Funnest Car Ever
Bought a 2012 X5d and was skeptical of the performance and how it differs from petrol. The guy before me removed all the emissions stuff from it so it runs extremely clean now. He also had it tuned. Its very quick off the line, but runs out of steam very fast in second gear. The diesels redline at 5000 rpm vs 7000 like a petrol. Once it shifts into 3rd, you're all good though. Its extremely spacious and offers a lot room for people and accessories. I only drive in the city and I get 21mph, very good. Very attractive vehicle and is a definite head turner at red lights and will get the neighbors going. I was lucky enough to get black on black on black. Everything is blacked out on mine so it looks extremely sporty. Overall, great vehicle for literally anything.

Least reliable car I have owned.
This is a love hate relationship. It is the least reliable BMW I have ever owned. However, I love the performance and the interior. It now has 87,000 miles and I have been its only owner. In the past 2 years alone the insurance has paid $13,500 in repairs. I have paid about $1,000 in repairs, not maintenance. Check engine lights, new turbo, new radiator, all the oil lines, I could go and and on. Still love it but I'm hesitant about trading it in for a new 2021 X5 which, again, I really like. Not sure about the new one's reliability.

Money pit
I bought my 2012 X5 with just 60,000 miles and have put close to 40,000 miles on since. During that time I have replaced the following. fuel pump, fuel pump module, starter, water cooling pump, air bags in rear suspension, engine gasket, and just had to replace the transfer case. It looks good when it runs.. but it rarely does.
