Don't believe bad reviews, this is a great car!!!
I have had my Insight EX for about a year and a half. I have almost 25,000 miles on it. This is my daily driver. In summer my MPG is usually in the high 40's to low 50's. MPG goes down when it gets cold, but only to the high 30's to low 40's. Obviously, in certain conditions the MPG can be worse, such as going 80 MPH with a 30 MPH headwind. The interior is so well laid out that you will wonder why all cars are not this intuitive. Everything is right in front of you, not in the middle of the dash like the Prius. The seats are fairly comfortable. On long trips it can start to get uncomfortable, but I don't know of any car that won't get uncomfortable after 12+ hours of driving. The rear seats are a little tight so that needs to be considered. The front seats are pretty roomy though. The height adjustment of the driver's seat means that anyone can get the right seating position in this car. Handling is above average, especially for a car of its class. It is not a sports car but it gives the driver confidence in corners and is very stable in windy conditions and at high speeds. Acceleration is not mind blowing but it is adequate. I have never had a problem merging onto a freeway or pulling out in traffic. The CVT causes the engine to make alot of noise, but the car goes when you step on the gas. For someone who is worried about the A/C shutting off at stoplights, there is a very simple way to keep it going. Shift the car to "S" before you stop. The engine and A/C will remain on while you are stopped. It costs a few MPG's but if you want the air on at a stop it is worth it. So the A/C complaint is not a reason to pass up this car. Overall, if you are looking for a fuel efficient car, this is by far the best value for the money out there.

Not for Travel
I took this car from Northwest Arkansas to Central Florida. The car was not made to travel over 55mph. At 70mph (the average speed limit on the interstate), with the eco-assist on, I averaged 28mpg on the highway. I never sped. Granted 28 is good, but its not what i paid for. And lately it has been very hot where I live and with the eco-assist on, the AC cuts off at a stop. So if you can't handle being hot, I would not suggest this car. Also, the sun visors serve no purpose at all.

I drive 100 miles a day
I've had my Insight for a little over two weeks and I now feel like I've driven it for enough miles (~2,000) and in enough different conditions (city, mountains, and highway) to rave about it unconditionally. I drive 100 mostly highway miles per day and I am averaging 49.5 miles per gallon; I'm not using any hypermiling techniques, but I do find myself aware of the hints given by the entertaining color-coded speedo and multi-function displays. I'm not happy only because that is double the mileage I was getting in my 10-year-old VW Golf, but because I truly enjoy driving this car. I'm going to comment on two of the things that others (including cars.com) have addressed as negatives but which I see as positives: 1) the seating position of the Insight is lower than the Golf or the Prius, but I think this is a matter of personal preference, and I find the lower position much more like a sports car and less like the bus-driver position preferred by those in minivans and suvs, and 2) The split rear window is actually a plus when driving at night with a higher vehicle shining its headlights in your back window. The bar is directly in line with the headlights of many trucks, cutting down greatly on the glare in the rear-view mirror; also, any visibility lost in the center mirror is more than made up for by the oversized side mirrors.

If you can Go for it...
Ok.. So I spent the better part of 6-8 months researching cars hovering around 15-20k that I could get great gas mileage with and count on for the long haul. I spent much too much time reviewing the Y@ris, Fiest@, & Fit on sites just like this for countless hours only to fall in love with the Honda Fit and then having my heart broken (luckily) on no year end incentives from the manufactr... Reanalyzing the market I found the Insight and couldnt believe the incentive, MPG's, warranty's, look & feel, and overall sticker against similar models (within the under 20k range).. So I moved on it and couldnt be happier with the futuristic bladerunner setup and figit'ing with all the gagets to get the best MPG's.. And let me say for the record (and please do review other sites) that you can get 50-60 MPG if you play it right and take it easy - which is simply unreal.. So yes - if your looking for a hot rod - look else where - I went from a car with 220 HP to this Pepster and lets just say the high speed lane or passing people just doesnt seem that important anymore when your getting double the millage (if your an aggressive driver you may want to pass - because the car will be frowning blue at you - which may in turn depress you..). And Im 6'2'' and have no problem FITing in the car. So if you can hustle a good sticker on the lot and think like me that this could be an investment if gas prices are at a current lull per the recession and senseless folks are still buying land tanks (up 20% this yr..) Then pull the trigger Best of luck & read up on the whole tips to increase your MPG (like not using your AC when city driving) Cheers

Love it!
The reason I bough this car was the great gas mileage. I like sleek look, the in car navigation system, and the handling.

Insightful
I love this vehicle. My husband talked me into getting it for our family mobile and it has exceeded my expectations. I love that it is so practical, but looks kind of rugged and cool. I don't feel like a minivan momma anymore. The seats are very comfortable and it is easy to drive and steer. I am about 5'2'' and can handle everything with ease, which is not the case with other SUVs.

LOVE THIS CAR!!!
I researched this car extensively on the internet and read at least a hundred reviews. Bought the LX. I was pleasantly surprised...it is so roomy. Yes the split rear window is a little weird to get used to...but WHO CARES?? The gas mileage is terrific. Ok, the sound system is a little tinny. I had a corolla which I loved. But wanted a hatchback to haul things around and BETTER mileage than 35mpg, and a Prius didn't appeal to me. The rear seats really do fold down to almost flat too. I was also concerned that the driver's seat would be too low to be comfortable on ingress and egress. Not a problem it turned out. Very happy. But no floor mats? Really now.....

Great Investment
Back in June of 2009 I had a chance to test drive a Insight. At the time I was toying with also geting a Prius. Around Jan of 2010 the Prius problems came out. As of March 20th, put a deposit the car has a nav unit with satalite radio. Based on my test drive of last year I have no problem in recommending this car to anybody.

Awesome car
I love this car. I can actually get 50 mpg with it, which is much better from the EPA estimate. I know how to drive it to get better fuel consumption, but it's not like I'm hypermiling or anything, just driving at a set speed. I also try to accelerate slowly, but I also like to have fun and this car let's me do that! Great handling, as good or better than any sports car I've ever driven. The smaller size is great for me too, I hate driving in big cars. I park in a bunch of different places and it's very easy to park this. Nice sound system, and I like the ipod jack ALOT! Great highway drive as well, not quite as "shaky" as some other small cars I've been in. I love this car!

Excellent Car
This car combines great handling with excellent brakes. It is a very responsive and well designed car. My combined mileage has hovered around 45. The EX model is the way to go. I did not get the Nav system - too costly. I use my Garmin Nuvi which works great. The body structure is tight and strong and the front seats are comfortable. The rear seat is a little tight for tall people and the carge area is more than adequate. The fit and finish are top notch. I test drove the 2010 Prius before I drove and purchased the Insight. I did not like the Prius handling or brake response. I have had the car less than 3 months and have driven 8,000 miles. I have not had a single problem with this car. It is a very synergistic car - all components works well together. Based upon the cost, quality, handling and fuel economy, I highly recommend this car.
