Best gas mileage, gorgeous car

I have been driving SUV's for 20 years and needed relief at the pump. I drove the Elantra because of its good looks and mileage estimates. I purchased for those reasons plus the comfortable and well-appointed interior, also the unparalled customer service Hyundai provides. On a recent trip from Richmond, VA to Greenville, SC, I got 41.6 mpg going 70 mph on cruise control. My in-town mileage is about 28 mpg, so the EPA estimates are pretty darn close in my experience. I am loving this car. It meets all my expectations and then some.

Best econobox I have driven

After having owned an Honda for a few days I swore I would never buy another econobox type car ever again, that thing was so bad I did not want to drive it anywhere regardless of the fuel economy, which was the only great thing about it. So, after test driving the Elantra at the Hyundai dealer and being treated as a valued potential customer I finished up buying the Elantra GLS with an automatic gear shift. The car now has 2000 miles and has been used as a commuter vehicle with one 200 mile freeway trip. As a commuter car on an 80% freeway 30 mile commute it has averaged around 29 mpg - a far cry from the touted 40 mpg. Nevertheless that was about what I had expected so I am not disappointed, particularly as it uses regular gas. On the out of town trip I averaged 31 which is excellent. These figures have been manually calculated but were close to what the compterized trip odometer claimed. In general I am not a big fan of automatics but this one is not as bad as some rental cars but it is reluctant to shift down when going up an incline such as freeway overpasses. At least I can manually shift down. Passing on two laners and merging on freeway ramps takes some planning and getting used to but I accept that as a trade off for the gas mileage. On a smooth road the interior noise level is low for this type of car. Handling is a mixed bag. On a smooth freeway curved onramp it's o.k. but on a bumpy road it feels less than planted, but compared to the Honda is 1000% better and it does not have tire squeal every time one goes through a corner like the Honda. The car came with cruise control and disk brakes all around, something most econoboxes don't have. The interior is very roomy for such a small car, and the seats, while supportive with some side bolstering unfortunately lack much lumbar support. My VW is way better in that regard. Understeer is very moderate and quite acceptable and it does not suffer from noticable torque steer probably because there is not much power going to the front wheels. Interior fittings are good for this price class, not like the minced cardboard feel of Honda. I am concerned with long term durability as after washing it when I leather it off I find the body panels give a lot and the front fog lights seem as if they want to pop out of the bumper when pushed. Because of the supply/demand equation I did not get a very good deal, but as long as the dealers continue to sell over list in the future, depreciation won't be worse than the competition. The dealer I bought from was very professional and if they were typical of the average Hyundai dealer, I would say that Honda and others need to be concerned. I could not rate reliability as it is too early, but suffice to say that the car so far has not had a problem and the dealer prep was outstanding. However one only knows how good the warranty is when something goes wrong!

very dissapointed

I have owned this car for 3 weeks and have put 900 mile's on it, First and for-most this car is a complete disapointment in the fuel efficiency dept..., I have done 3 very accurate consumption tests on this car with 80% highway and 20% city combined, and could not get better than 28 mpg. The onboard trip computer is a complete joke., quite often it was telling me that I was getting 38-43 mpg, when in fact I was only getting 28 in very conservitive driveing. I was babying this car, useing every hyper-mileing trick in the book.,and still could not achieve better than 29-mpg. Other than the extremely over-rated epa estimate of 29-city and 40-highway,it is otherwise a very nice car. This car has a nice sporty ride, a baeutiful dash lay-out,especially at night, the well lit blue hue backlights are nice. the interior is very big and comfortible even for tall drivers like myself.

40mpg?

nice looking car, however, the seats are not real comfortable on a long trip.I sacrificed the comfort of a larger car to get better mileage, but after close to 5000 miles of highway driving,I was more in the 33-34mpg range than 40.around town,I barely get 22 mpg-nowhere near the sales pitches.Another problem is the intense heat down south overpowers the AC,much more so than my previous vehicle.very disappointed as this is the first new vehicle I have bought in over 30 years

Very efficent vehicle

The performance for this vehicle is outstanding, it has sufficent power for what I use it for (2 persons and 2 golf bags. At 2000 RPM,s on the interstate highway I do get 40 MPG. 2000 RPM,s is approximately 65 miles per hour. It is a very nice looking vehicle on the outside, the inside could use some redesign i.e. the controls on the steering wheel are a bit cumbersum, there should be more colors avalable for the interior fabric.

Best Car I Have Purchased

This vehicle not only has the best exterior styling in it's class but it has an interior well above average. Gas mileage is very good and the ride is sporty. I have racked up a lot of miles on my new car as I just like to get in it and drive!

Top contender in the compact class

This vehicle is a commuters dream, it just doesn't feel like a small car yet it delivers top MPG's in the compact class. It is pure value at its best, warranty, comfort, affordability along with a fun to drive factor make it a leader that others will be chasing for sometime. Just try and buy one, you'll be lucky to find a dealer with inventory. The only thing holding Hyundai back from better numbers is they've maxed out their production. Glad I got mine when I did in anticipation of $5.00 per gal fuel that is sure to come.
